I have had the occasional experience of being made uncomfortable, or even feeling nervous about my safety, when encountering homeless people in cities. This has not changed my view that homeless people are human beings who should be treated with respect and dignity.

I've been skeptical of UUism in the past, and I've been to a couple of their services that just didn't work for me. But this one did, so that was nice.

Went to a Unitarian Universalist church today. It was really nice.

The reason people suspect LLMs are conscious is that they are capable of doing things that were previously only doable with consciousness. To me, it seems more likely that we have found another means of doing these things. Which is quite remarkable in and of itself.

This mostly just makes me miss how, on the other place, I'd have back-and-forth interactions with friends, most of whom didn't switch over to here

The size of the circlular avatars are getting smaller as you move around and outwards representing less and less interaction.

look, im not asking for much but i do expect my party leaders to be sufficiently partisan to endorse the party nominee for mayor in their home city over the corrupt traitor who’s trying to hawk off his influence to donald trump in order to to stay out of prison

Hakeem Jeffries praises Mayor Eric Adams: "I respect his contributions to the city of New York ... most importantly as someone who wore the uniform to protect and serve."

I liked your book, One Billion Americans. It's too bad about everything since then.

also, in keeping with Vance’s view of american identity, only white people are fully American with the right to critique or dissent. nonwhites must show proper gratitude (supporting Trump or marrying JD Vance) before they can speak critically of the country (in approved ways, of course)

Weaponized gratitude is a key tool in the abuser's toolkit. The goal is to convince the victim that they owe the abuser so much, they should feel guilty for wanting to complain.
Tweet from the VP:
Joy Reid has had such a good life in this country. It's been
overwhelmingly kind and gracious to her. She is far wealthier than most.
Yet she oozes with contempt.
My honest, non-trolling advice to Joy Reid is that you'd be a much
happier person if you showed a little gratitude

I can’t think of a time I’ve seen JD Vance demonstrate gratitude for anything.

really enjoying all the people trying to explain the bible to the pope today

Today, more than ever, we must return to the heart, the center of feeling and emotion, the locus of freedom. Though it includes reason, the heart transcends and transforms it. Only by returning to the heart can we undergo a true ecological conversion that transforms our personal

Everyone made fun of it, but I think it was much better when ChatGPT constantly reminded you that it's an AI language model. Now it pretends to be a person, which is not good

Oh, very different example: Baba Is You. Absolutely breaks my brain, but an incredibly compelling puzzle game with a really solid aesthetic. No real story or characters to speak of, but a really creative type of puzzle that engages the player in a unique way.
cosmological.bsky.social
If evaluated similarly to film, BotW is pretty unimpressive. Its story and characters aren't particularly special, for instance. But the emergent storytelling created by the experience of playing is something that sticks with you and is clearly the result of a lot of hard work and good craftsmanship
cosmological.bsky.social
So I do kind of reject the premise of the question in the sense that I think certain games have a lot of artistic merit precisely *because* they're really good at creating that escapist experience. I'd say Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a solid example.
cosmological.bsky.social
Like, I think some games can and do succeed artistically in ways that can be similar to how film, TV, or books can, but games are mostly unique in that they involve a lot of player interaction, which means there's a real art to building *emergent* storytelling out of the experience of playing.
