Very excited to see our @nikogeldner.bsky.social lab x Feng Zhou lab work featured on the cover of Science!
(1/5) We reveal how root architecture and nutrient leakage shape spatial patterns of microbial colonization, moving beyond traditional models of uniform exudation.
science.org
Using precise spatial and temporal analysis, researchers in Science provide insight into how bacteria around the root interact both with the plant and with each other.

A confocal microscopy image shows root-colonizing bacteria clustering around an emerging lateral root, where localized glutamine leakage induces spatially confined reporter activity.

It was a pleasure to host @katarzynaretzer.bsky.social at PLEN, where she shared updates from @barleymicrobreed.bsky.social as well as endeavors into imaging plant roots in the dark

Come join the best research group in Copenhagen! (might be a biased opinion)

Plan U, for universal, is the necessary standard. Post everything as a preprint at or before point of submission. Then publish in any journal you want but never pay exorbitant APCs.

70 pages of supplementary data to provide this mechanism for wheat immunity and unlock areas for diversity

Onto the sex: Wild relatives of wheat are not so robust to mutagenesis, so the team had to use a different approach to finding resistance genes

Speed breeding was a critical tool to develop before we can clone and manipulate wheat resistance genes:

Politics, religion, and sex…. And wheat breeding? @brandewulff.bsky.social is at @ucph.bsky.social sharing his research into biotechnology for pathogen resistance in wheat

I am happy to present a, what I learned from our in-field to lab approach @barleymicrobreed.bsky.social -which #roottraits #rootphenotyping were informative in an approach across 3 countries (5 fields, Austria, Lebanon, Morocco) - and b, my long year interest of experimental design influences #root

Interested in root phenotyping in soil and in the dark? and in Copenhagen on Oct 2? @katarzynaretzer.bsky.social will give a seminar at @ucph.bsky.social PLEN at 11.00 in room M117 - stop by and see high-resolution imaging and multi-omics at work!

Further, drought enriched Pseudomonas NRPS genes encoding viscosin, a biosurfactant. Do motility compounds provide a competitive advantage in the rhizosphere under drought? Yes: a viscosin-deficient mutant was less able to colonize the wheat rhizosphere under drought!
courtneyherms.bsky.social
Using amplicon sequencing of NRPS, they found that drought selected for distinct groups of siderophores from different taxonomical groups, enriching for Streptomyces and depleting Pseudomonas siderophores
