NHS GP Federation CEO. Not a GP/clinician. Ex artillery forward observer, with dodgy knees and hearing. Favourite comment about me: "His comms style is like a brick through a window."

New cat food in. Cat 2, sniffed it, had one nibble. Looked at me and went out. She then faced me in the garden and started eating grass. Cats use grass as an emetic.

She would rather throw up than keep the one mouthful of new food. All while making eye contact with me.

Cats…

Spring for me. The world* is full of renewal and life, and each day gets longer and brighter.

Autumn is calmer, but it is noticeably darker each week, and the heating kicks in occasionally, which is in itself a sign of impending winter.

* physical world, not humanity.

It's a really good day when you're in a meeting with local GPs, and you reach a direction and opinion that every single GP practice, PCN CD, and Federation director agrees.

When the entirety of local general practice stares you in the face and gives you one message, you really do need to listen.

One for the Scottish people living in England…

It’s a beautiful bright moonlit night tonight.

This is a really useful data set for people interested in comparing how much councils spend on different stuff.

commonslibrary.parliament.uk/local-author...

Kudos to the House of Commons Library for pulling it together.
Local authority data: finances
Browse details on both funding and spending of local authorities in England.

I had a HP Laserjet 4000 printer that lasted from 2001 until 2023, only needed one toner change. Replaced it with a Brother, I have a spare toner box on top of the cupboard, don't think I'll need it for 4-5 years minimum.

Inkjet printers are just a money donation scheme for manufacturers.

The "do something" versus "do nothing" health things give fairly predictable results.

Maybe a study on the effectiveness of different schemes in getting people to move from the latter to the former?

I’ll have a go. Surely it’s easy. Just say a few mean things about England and how De Gaulle was entirely correct and you get at least a month of goodwill.

I’ll have a good think, but one I’ve just seen is that our smear test DNA (did not attend) rate has dropped by 50% compared to last year.

It’s historically got the largest proportion of people who DNA.

It’s very pleasing seeing that improve, esp the take-up by those who’ve previously declined.

It’s all a bit doom-scrolly today.

I think I’ll just focus on posting positive stuff this week and see how that goes.

I wonder what the proportion of journalists to actual Tories is there.

A good physiotherapist is excellent for this, and really should be far more readily available on the NHS.

This, on the other hand, is fucking bullshit.

Arresting an elderly, blind man because he held a placard saying "I oppose Genocide. I support Palestine Action."

If this is terrorism, then water is whisky.

Life expectancy was 60, but healthy life expectancy was far lower. I grew up in a mining village and people in their 50s were properly old.

Yes, the industry and its people were abandoned for political reasons, but the life destroying industry itself should never be brought back.

This is just unacceptable, calling this a “bold plan” is ridiculous!

It’s a plan to create a nation of fear and intimidation.

Just no!

There is an institutional culture in many parts of the NHS of focussing wholly on money, and just not doing credible patient impact assessments when considering any cuts to service.

Or worse, having them done and treating it as unimportant for many reasons nothing to do with patient health.

🚨 Exclusive: New leaked document proves @NHSEngland was warned a decade ago about failures in child hearing test centres across England.
Hundreds of children have been harmed, some left with lifelong problems:

NHS ignored warnings on children’s hearing tests for a decade
Health bosses in England knew about testing failures in 2014. Hundreds of babies with severe hearing problems were left without help, leading to delayed development

The Battle of Cable Street.

A thread 🧵 with pictures and ALT text.

On this day in 1936, the East End of London rose up against fascism. The Battle of Cable Street.

A packed East End street in 1936: thousands of anti-fascist residents filling the road and pavements, shopfronts behind them.

With almost no politicians willing to stand up and defend the ECHR, and it being vilified for years, it still retains a near 2:1 (once “don’t know” are removed) positive return in polls.

Shows you just exactly who the politicians want to appease.
yougov.co.uk
With Kemi Badenoch saying the Tories would take the UK out of the ECHR, our poll in June found the public wanted to remain members by 51% to 27%

The rank dishonesty of politicians over the ECHR is a defining point in how far the standard of political debate has fallen.

Ahh, the first named storm with impact of the season. I suppose it’s time to break out the heavier clothes for winter.
craig.nikolic.co.uk
I’m just really surprised a journalist hasn’t done a FOI of every Trust and ICB asking for a detail of patient facing reductions in service or funding this year, both actual and planned. And the attached patient impact analysis that they surely have done.

Wait, so me in HOI4 getting Trotters to replace Stalin in a coup then take over the world only when people attacked me isn't a sign that I'm a military genius like Hegseth?!
