Bank of England warns growing risk AI bubble could burst; gold hits new $4,000 an ounce record – business live
Soaring tech valuations could drop amid potentially ‘disappointing’ progress on AI, central bank says; gold has doubled in two years and extends 50% rally so far this year Peter Hargreaves, the billionaire co-founder of Hargreaves Lansdown, is retiring from the UK’s largest personal investment site, seven months after its £5.4bn acquisition by private equity firms. Hargreaves, 79, who set up the business in 1981 in the back bedroom of his house in Clifton with Stephen Lansdown, is handing his board position to his son Robert and said this “marks a proud new chapter in the family legacy”. His firm pioneered “DIY” investments, allowing people to invest directly in shares via its website without costly financial advisers. The Bristol-based company said he had rejoined the board earlier this year to “provide continuity and support through a period of change” following its takeover by a private equity consortium of Jersey-based buyout giant CVC Capital Partners, Sweden’s Nordic Capital and the Abu Dhabi wealth fund, which completed in March. Hargreaves Lansdown is a company I have loved ever since its formation in 1981 and after the takeover, I felt it was important that I had close contact with the business. I have been greatly impressed by the strength and direction of the team now leading the business and I am confident it is now well-placed for future success. Continue reading...

Simon Jordan on TalkSport, unchallenged yet again.

As a Talksport employee, I am embarrassed by this rebuttal of what Neville said. This moron pontificates without question. It is bonkers.

And yeah, i'll probably be sacked. Fuck it.

I like how the artwork for this Oh Lord Ashcroft LP shows people literally walking towards certain death in the sea when faced with the prospect of staying on the beach with himself and his acoustic.

'Richard Ashcroft is as much the Scott Walker of Britpop as David Baddiel is the Spike Milligan of comedy is the new rock ‘n’ roll. You’d think someone who is a million different people from one day to the next would have more than a couple of ideas'

It’s a depressing thought, but I believe Three Headless Thatchers would do alarmingly well in the polls.

I just saw someone use the abbreviation “AI;DR” and I’ll be laughing for a while.

Quite often life reminds you that Nigel Blackwell narrates British life better than anyone. This news story appears to be constructed entirely from Half Man Half Biscuit references.

Look I know shoplifting from independent shops is very bad but I can't help thinking that this woman could have done with the crystal ball *before* she went shoplifting?

It's from the local rag and no credit required, because fuck them... 😆
Shoplifter, 58, in court after stealing crystal ball from Bridgnorth shop

A shoplifter who stole a crystal ball, ornaments and greetings cards has been ordered to pay hundreds of pounds in compensation.

Also: none of the above was planned.

I spent my 20s and early 30s having a good time. I had a family and got a PhD in my mid-late 30s. I was an academic during my 40s. I’m doing something different now. You’ve got plenty of time to do good stuff and also (just as important) loads of stupid shit.

Lovely stuff Danny. Congrats.

Slade are bloody great, innit.

That’s it. That’s all I wanted to say.

You could always order several hundred. You then have the 'going into unrecoubable debt' experience of a major label artist.

We have a new EP out in a few weeks. Pre-order now, and get our version of Electric Six's 'Danger! High Voltage' as an immediate download, which sees us rip off Patsy Cline AND Slade in the same song.

Fill yer boots, bab.

And - given I assume these are lazer printed acetates (?) - I’m not sure how well a record will perform after repeated plays, but to have vinyl in stock for basically ~£22 a unit and zero faff is quite something.

Be interesting to see if quality/lead times change once this takes off, because I can see it becoming v popular with DIY/small acts. It’s the best (very) short order service I’ve found so far.
craighamilton.bsky.social
Elastic Stage is the service. Packaging is amazing quality. Vinyl is decent. Runs *a touch* fast to my ears, but is otherwise very good. We’ll use it to have ~5-10 on hand to sell at shows, and sell to order online. Very impressed so far. Lead time is about 3 weeks.
