Ain't that beautiful?

I love it when a movie is touted as the best in its sub-genre since a movie that came out one year prior.

Another aspect of the sound effects in Mushishi is the texture of the brush strokes. Whether it's an outline, filling in, subtracting, or one big, rough stroke, there's a ton of personality. Captured so well in both languages.

Completely new translation and lettering.

Stylized subtitled sound effect invite close scrutiny because they sit right next to the originals. Urushibara has a cool style of surrounding sound effects with tones or noise, then shaping that surrounding area and giving additional texture. Phil extends those textures seamlessly.

Mushishi was drawn on paper. When sound effects overlap with dense art, its import nt to consider if they were drawn on top of that art, or if they were drawn first and then the line art was drawn around them. How screen tone interacts is also important. (I'll add more to this thread later today.)

There's a new English release of Mushishi, lettered by Phil Christie (@kernedout.bsky.social). I adore how Urushibara-sensei utilizes texture in her art, and how the sound effects inherit that texture. Phil does an amazing job replicating that with subtitled SFX. Notes in alt text!

Ending 2025 and beginning 2026 on high notes. Listened through the Marty Supreme score five whole times yesterday after seeing it.

My favorite movies I saw for the first time in 2025, not counting new releases. Da fuckin movies. Amazing stuff.

Lots of good movies in 2025.

Started reading The History and Technique of Lettering by Alexander Nesbitt. Absolutely fascinating, with the early portion I've read dealing with the development and evolution of alphabets, and how the tools used to write affected those changes. Regional differences, etc. Full of great diagrams!

The manga Witches by Daisuke Igarashi contains references to the Bionicle character Thok.

The first pictures of the English release of Billy Bat are out! So excited show show off what @lettererbrendo.bsky.social and I did.

These pages have fun bits where we styled the text closer to what an American comic from 1949 would look like. More info in the alt text!

Drawing a tiny bit of a bat's coat that gets clipped by a sound effect

Can you believe they have a dot com for that? So twisted and messed up.

And at the very end, this fun text collage as the preview for volume 11! The column on the right uses a font with dozens of weights, utilized so "BE" and "SHAKIN," are the same width. I'm very pleased that it was possible to match the general arrangement and density.

I kept the names uppercase so that they would fill the same space as the Japanese names. No descenders, less negative space. The fonts were chosen to match overall structure, and the brushes to get the line weight and ending characteristics.

The end of the volume has a Q&A section with various characters. Each signs their name in unique handwriting. I've been using specific fonts for characters' handwriting, so I knew to use CC Richard Starkings Brush for Elda's name. Fonts were used as the base, then traced with brushes.

Another sound effect that I'm very pleased with.
December 12, 2025 at 4:34 PM
Crazy cool sound effects here. It would have been very difficult to replace them since they're over radial lines. I had to make sure the texture on the subtitles was the same. The original reuse kana, so I drew mine and then remixed the positioning and texture each time.

It wouldn't be a volume of Otaku Elf without some kind of food packaging to replace over and over.
