... too many British "regeneration" schemes are anything but: ugly, over-sized, greedy & loveless. Of course the "Old Town Newbury" proposals are not perfect (nothing in this world is) but they're proper urban restitching, undoing the deep errors made by traffic modernists...

“Making Newbury a town we can all be proud of.” Old Town Newbury could set the standard for British town centre regeneration. A place of beauty, prosperity & sustainability....
createstreets.bsky.social
The proposals revive local identity and craft: brick detailing, corbels, arches, ironwork recalling the Eagle Works on site. Architecture that feels “of Newbury.”
createstreets.bsky.social
It’s about re-stitching Newbury’s historic fabric: new alleys, mews, yards and courts echo the town’s original grain. Fine-grained “Lego towns” not crude “Duplo towns.”
createstreets.bsky.social
It’s centripetal not centrifugal: bringing people back into town rather than pushing them out into car-dependent estates. Less infrastructure spend, more vitality.
createstreets.bsky.social
This is gentle density: terraced homes & mansion blocks at 40–60 homes/hectare. The same land accommodates double the homes of suburban sprawl—while creating lively, walkable streets.
createstreets.bsky.social
It’s a triple win: more homes, a more beautiful place, and more sustainable living. 317 new homes, 950 residents, right in the heart of Newbury.
