There’s so much happening right now, I thought I’d put together a running thread on the dismantling of #climate and research and knowledge infrastructure in the United States 🧵

Even if this doesn't all happen exactly this way, parts of these directives are ruled illegal, the agency is rebuilt some years from now, etc. the damage that has been done (and is being done every day) will be felt for decades.

Exclusive: National Science Foundation staff were told today that the agency’s 37 divisions—across all eight directorates—are being abolished and the number of programs within those divisions will be drastically reduced.

This after PGC funding was cut from NSF and NASA. This is a horrible cut to scientific infrastructure and critical services

THIS FRIDAY: Can we halt the illegal mass firings of our federal scientific workforce?

We will argue in District Court this week for a temporary restraining order on the execution of Trump’s Executive Order.

Why we can't put Antarctic funding on ice:

Australia’s commitment to Antarctica needs to eliminate
repeated short-term funding crises, writes Matt King in (@deformedearth.bsky.social) today's Mercury newspaper.

DOGE is taking a wrecking ball to load-bearing staff across the federal government. We have a civic duty to counter its rhetoric about “cutting costs.”

Our bureaucracy is not a business. Civil servants provide essential services equitably and efficiently, and we owe them our support.

Mostly preaching to the choir here, but a group of us moderators over on Reddit's AskScience put together kind of an explainer for the implications of some of the attacks on science funding and infrastructure in the US if it's useful for anyone else to share:
