I write a newsletter (yeah yeah so does everyone) about news & progressive, feminist politics. This week it's a question that comes up again and again in Aus: "Why are these protesters ruining *my* day?"

Most people think protest is just 'raising awareness', rather than making a demand.
Why disruptive protest?
Plus, a free book for you.

Please let me bitch for one second with no consequences thanks — I cannot take seeing anymore videos or social posts of someone talking about an extensively covered news event and the comment section filled with "why am I not seeing this everywhere" "media will never tell you this" I'm losin' itttt
crystaljane.bsky.social
It's still a better campy track than ME!

I'm dying for a pop culture podcast that just focuses on ONE topic per episode, in depth.

Every single pop culture pod is covering 3 or 4 items in an ep, I'm tired of it

Tony Blair is trying to help tech billionaire Larry Ellison get access to the entire NHS dataset to feed his privately-owned AI model.

This is a good case study of 1) how vague the teen social ban policy is, and 2) how eager the govt is to handball off responsibility.

The laws *could* apply to Wikipedia, so its they asked for confirmation. The govt won't confirm bc it's leaving enforcement up to the eSafety commissioner.

Australia's teen social media ban may require Wikipedia to restrict Australians under the age of 16 from having accounts on its platforms, @cameronwilson.bsky.social reports.
Wikipedia could be included in the teen social media ban. Australian users are worried

Lmao girl no one misunderstands Taylor Swift. Everyone gets it. "Mass appeal and lyrical subltlety" like she's the first to do that come ON.
wsj.com
Taylor Swift is more than a pop star. She’s a great songwriter who proves that mass appeal and lyrical subtlety can go together, writes Harvard English professor Stephanie Burt.

Targeting of pro-Palestine, climate activists & other left-wing voices in Aus for the past few years has felt like McCarthysim to me. Even moreso after the Kirk murder last week.

@theshufflediary.bsky.social & I hashed it out on the pod today – watch on YouTube.

Touchy response from Coorey (I assume he's just playing into the theatre of The List tho). When I'm thinking about the tension between journalists and podcasters/news influencers it's moreso about beat journalists and 'working reporters'. Coorey & podcasters do very similar jobs imo.

Exclusive | Dezi Freeman's last Facebook post was a poster for a movie about a tribe of Native Americans who went on the run after violent clashes with the government. See his posting history here.

My newest article for Crikey!

This one's about the constant political violence against trans people in America, and the hypocrisy of leaders calling out "political violence" against Kirk, but staying silence about violence against my community.

A hard read so stay safe 💗💖

Discovering computer as an adult makes you go crazy. Discovering computer as a baby makes you go crazy. In all of human history, there will only ever be one generation to discover computer at the correct age: 13
internethippo.bsky.social
The problem with every post-Millennial generation is they got to go straight to high speed internet. Of course you'll get computer madness that way. Make them start with those old screeching modems and work their way up

Best part of today's Cut Through podcast is when I ask Stephen Mayne how he would mess with Rupert & Lachlan Murdoch if he was in James' shoes. He gave about 5 ways to be a corporate PITA lol #auspol

I'm not really a "representation politics" girly at all, but I think we can agree that a media cohort that is 90% white cannot present themselves as a "healthier" alternative to mainstream, corporate media in Australia.
crystaljane.bsky.social
If podcasts & platform-first content is really the next frontier of Australian news and information, then we need to see a concerted effort to make that frontier healthy and diverse.

Who gets access? Who gets amplified? Who gets funded? Why are they all white? These are the questions.
crystaljane.bsky.social
The data is telling about who politicians believe is 'worth' their time, bc it's not just about audience size. One very small podcast (only has 11 ratings) interviewed several politicians.

Speaking to small groups is important! But only white podcasters seem to get that opportunity.
crystaljane.bsky.social
I ran the numbers on all the podcasts that politicians went on during the election. A whopping 88% had *only* white hosts.

The only systemic flaw of corporate media the new media ecosystem even gets close to addressing is gender – 45% of podcasts had at least one woman host #auspol

A big part of why white centrist journos can call this a tragedy with a straight face is because to them it is; Kirk etc pose no viable harm to them, their interests, their fetishisation of 'robust debate' and both sidesery - this violence thus feels realer than the violence Kirk's views embodied

Must read @thesizzle.com.au by @cameronwilson.bsky.social

"I saw videos of a guy being arrested, calling him a 'boomer leftist' responsible for the attack, who was later released because he wasn’t the shooter. Then I saw that Kirk had died.

I felt myself scrolling, and scrolling, and scrolling."
