Dwarves and elves are staples of modern fantasy, but they derive from races in Norse mythology known as dvergar and alfar. Final Fantasy (1987) pays homage to these roots with Mt Duergar being home of the dwarves and Elfheim (from the Norse 'Alfheimr') being home of the elves.

I hope everyone is enjoying that liminal space between Xmas and New Year's. While I only played and finished a handful of New Games this year, 2025 marks the year I finally beat FFXI and FFXIV and now I've beaten FFI-XVI. Also, FFV joins my 100%/Platinum club along with FFI, VII, XV, and XVI.

Midgardsormr is the great serpent of Norse myth that lives in the ocean encircling the known world, Midgard. At Ragnarök, the snake will fill the air and sea with poison. In FFVII Rebirth, Midgardsormr attacks with Toxic Waters to exhale poison, contaminating its surroundings

The biblical tale of Cain killing his brother Abel is often used as an allegory for sibling rivalry or fratricide. In FF16, the tragic events at Phoenix Gate between Clive and Joshua are hinted at during the preceding fight - the dragoon adopts the iconic pose of FF4’s Kain.
