Did you know that as of 2014, the "Tales of" RPG series actively stopped crediting their English localizers, with the sole exception of Tales of Berseria (2017)? That's pretty sad for a genre that supposedly lives or dies based on the quality of its writing! #TranslatorsintheCredits

Folks like Oli and Morgan are often unsung heroes in our industry so I was so excited to get them on GMNB! Fascinating chat here with both of them on writing, performance, and localization!

Freelancing: Everything. What rates are acceptable. How to create an invoice. That it's okay to negotiate when presented with an unreasonable deadline. That you need to give yourself time off. Etc.

Translating: Best practices/standard wording for system text. How to time voiced lines.
To my fellow translators: what do you wish someone had taught you about translation (whether the act or translation or having a freelance job) that you had to learn by yourself?

Extremely proud to announce I was a translator on Octopath Traveler 0! 🎉 So glad this game got a second life on consoles, and heartened to see reviewers say the story brought them to tears. Guess that means we did our job. 😊

Octopath Traveler 0 changes scenery from a mobile world to a single player one. It's not a perfect move, but overall fans of the series have another impressive title in this classic-styled series. Adventure, and town building, awaits! ⛰️

My review is up for Octopath Traveler 0! It's got some blemishes, but hot damn, it's got heart. Easily the best story in the series, and unequivocally the boldest.

Scattered gameplay issues aside, Octopath Traveler 0's bold storytelling and surprisingly decent town-building combine to forge a fantastic RPG.

My final(?) bit of writing for the year and in an interesting twist of fate it's at Kotaku! I reviewed Octopath Traveler 0.

I truly loved this game and it gave me a great deal to this about re: earnest story-telling and giving oneself permission *to love* something.

Octopath Traveler 0 is a hefty RPG length-wise and I'm still working my way through it—so my review will be up when it's ready! Until then: I think this the best Octopath yet and that a reworked mobile version shouldn't scare off anyone who hasn't played Champions of the Continent.

i literally just talked about this exact thing and why you absolutely shouldn't do it without a very good reason in translated text, why are you hurting me personally, nintendo

i haven't been in this much physical pain since your marketers called famicom detective club a visual novel
I don't know which of my kouhais need to hear this, but because I'm seeing this in a ton of commercial J>E game locs: you really shouldn't retain quotation marks in the same places as the Japanese source text 9 times of 10, especially outside dialogue. Punctuation parity in general is often sloppy.

~2006? - self study using free online resources, then Rosetta Stone
2012 - BA in Japanese, with a semester abroad
2015 - MA in Japanese, began a year-long program at IUC Yokohama, passed N2 late that year
2016 - passed N1 after spending the summer cramming kanji
I'm curious what others' JLPT journey was.

I'll start:

2016 - started studying Japanese at uni
2019 - passed N2
2021 - failed N1
2024 - passed N1

Ah, the dream of having the devs annotate all the text in the game... 🥺
Now that's Winter, I'm thinking about NEWSLETTER. But I haven't written anything for one yet...

Right now, my energy is going towards preparing Chapter 5 for localization. The translation process begins next week. We have extracted all the English text and we are now annotating it.
