Today on the blog: BP-Games-Brand Consent-Like Products (TM). Shaking off the blogging cobwebs (blogwebs?) with a nice breezy 3,000 words about how we approach consent in our porn games

www.bpgamesinc.com/bp-games-bra...
Okay now that we’re safely behind the “Continue reading” tag: you need to think about consent in erotic fiction the same way you’d think about raw flour in cooking. There’s a lot you can do with it, and you wouldn’t necessarily be wrong if you were to say that it’s almost always foundational to the larger structure. But nobody, NOBODY enjoys a mouthful of raw flour. You’ll see a lot of shit being talked by people who’ll say “consent is sexy”, but for my money, the sexiest thing about consent in erotic fiction is how many ways you can stretch, squish, and otherwise deform it into whatever’s hottest for your story.

Take Opportunity: A Sugar Baby Story as an example. Almost all of the sex that happens in Opportunity happens within either the context of a negotiated transactional relationship (Jackie being Roman’s sugar baby, Kate being a sex worker paid by Roman) or a long-term committed relationship (Juniper & Rose’s sex tapes, Jackie & Olive’s romance). This means that the vast majority of sex is taking place within contexts wherein consent can be assumed (or more specifically, within contexts wherein consent can be assumed to have been easily obtained due to the nature of the relationship). On one level this is very safe and boring, but the thing about having these frameworks in which consent is assumed means that we can now have a lot of fun with the PRESENTATION.

fromsoft also is like, SO SO SO proactive with reusing old assets, entire boss fights even in the case of elden ring, and that's the only way you stay sane doing it at that scale
moomanibe.bsky.social
"who is your main" but it refers ambigiuously to who you play as or who you are dating
moomanibe.bsky.social
some day someone with both big money and creative control is going to finally yank the mass effect dating sim genre up by the roots and figure out how to replant their audience somewhere they can scope more reasonably - like a AAA visual novel, or a fighting game or something, and make SO much money

BG3 is funny because of how it straddles that weird line between being for turbonerds who would not care if everyone was a 2d painting and being for people whose primary concern is whether their love interests' lips are glistening just right

the fact that it managed to walk that line is astonishing
moomanibe.bsky.social
it's also def true tho that baldur's gate in particular and uh, games in the "mass effect romance" vein have very high expectations around their character interactions and I'd almost peg that as a genre demand now more than just, juuust technological advances or whatever
moomanibe.bsky.social
I think most modern AAA games bet on the former tho. Going viral with high quality critical path content is an easier bet when your budget and hiring strategy emphasizes going all-in on setpieces rather than lots of little bespoke one-offs.
moomanibe.bsky.social
Part of this is, for better or worse, the conflict of "does it feel worth it to make a bunch of content most people won't see". It's a hard bet on the internet where the answer could be "it weakens the whole game" or the answer could be "you go memetically viral as a game with cool secrets"

IMO this has always been a choice gamedevs have had to make - fidelity vs scale. it's just that the common wisdom tilts heavily towards fidelity these days.

chrono cross on ps1 made a choice when it decided to have 50+ playable party members and what it sacrificed was unique per-char dialogue
irhottakes.bsky.social
I think choice is becoming a victim of technological advances and player expectations. If you choose whether Bob or Jim live in a SNES RPG, you’ve got a different set of pixels and text boxes. Now you‘ve got a new set of voice lines, Hollywood tier animations, etc.

Thinking about it, the original Deus Ex may be the king of choice in a game with a story, because your choices are significant, linked to gameplay and unforced. From the very start, for instance, whether you use or avoid lethal force against the “terrorists” determines something about you.

did anyone, in fact, love activities
moomanibe.bsky.social
this 100% tracks lolsob
moomanibe.bsky.social
the funniest part to me is like. even if I was playing one of those. isn't the point of an open world to. experience the world. isn't this just undermining their own intended experience
moomanibe.bsky.social
"don't you have specific gameplay activities like being teleported to a minigame or quest giver that you want to do from the PS5 menu instead of playing the game" no????? the game is meant to be experienced in-context??? also there are no quests or minigames this is a linear narrative experience
moomanibe.bsky.social
love to commiserate with other devs about how completely crazed the requirement for your game to have "activities" on PS5 is if you are making anything that is, like, linear, or generally not open world

How do I explain to offline people that my favorite Japanese mascot said "we can only be liberated from queer oppression if we are truly seen as human" and then started wielding fireworks like a rocket launcher on the side of a mountain without sounding like I've totally lost it?

Chiitan has a dream.
I hope that one day the term LGBT will become a thing of the past.
I will continue to spread my message until we live in a world where everyone can love freely and is free from persecution and discrimination.
Until then, let's all support each other🤍

yeah it was... miserable to read through and try to "answer" all these

what legal recourse do artists and museums have against international militaries stealing and using our work to commit warcrimes, since apparently that's a conversation we need to have now.

Losing my mind and what look like video game assets but instead were used to justify war crimes and genocide in the real world
NEW: Since October 2023, the IDF Spokesperson's Unit has released dozens of 3D animations illustrating alleged Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iranian sites

The style is unmistakable: satellite zoom-ins, black & white wireframes, and red-textured houses - a new visual language of war.Our analysis of 43 official IDF videos found recycled 3D environments, spatial inaccuracies, and assets lifted from unrelated artists and institutions. We traced over 30 unique assets to Washington-based 3D creator Ian Hubert, who makes bespoke models created for his sci-fi project Dynamo Dream, available to his Patreon subscribers.

Models of parking lots, antennas, + pipes were repurposed as Hamas and Iranian military sites @evanhill

Fascinating work here tracing how the IDF recycled 3D assets from a cyberpunk sci-fi art project, the Scottish Maritime Museum and elsewhere to populate its widely-seen models of supposed enemy locations in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran. One of the most infamous, the alleged underground Hamas command center at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, used to justify an unprecedented assault on the biggest medical center in Gaza, was actually an animation the IDF had used the previous year, saying at the time it was a tunnel beneath a UN school.
