Happy to spread the word. :)

Tales of Phantasia also comes to mind as having multiple fan translations (and technically multiple official translations), but I'm not sure how much debate there was/is over those. (Same for Ys 1 and its multiple official translations.)

From my book about #Undertale 's official English-to-Japanese translation

I'd like to expand on this for an article on my site, so if you have any examples of "imprinting" situations in fandoms, please let me know

Some quick examples include FF4, FF6, Trails in the Sky, what else?

I think the quoted post might help answer your question (it examines the JP text in comparison to the PS1 and WotL translations). And also it seems that kind of elevated language was specifically requested for Vagrant Story (another Matsuno game). (www.vg247.com/make-it-bibl...)

Seconding Final Fantasy Tactics (especially the "Blame yourself or god" line), Chrono Trigger, Ace Attorney Investigations 2, and Symphony of the Night. Adding Lunar, Mother 1, PSO2, and Twisted-Wonderland. Possibly Suikoden, but I think I only saw comments on the talking sword's name.

You made it halfway through the week *and* we still have free shipping? Sounds like the perfect time to treat yourself to a new book and support indie bookstores in the process. 📚

Okay, games researchers: looking for something that happened in 1991-92ish. the sound team at Sierra On-Line was interviewed, including Chris Braymen; talked in the interview about using character and leitmotif, key changes, and transition pieces. Trying to find the magazine, if anyone has clues.

Did you know I wrote a book about the origins of Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, console RPGs, and their rise to success in North America?

I updated my personal interview list - chiefly to account for deaths that I've missed.

thehistoryofhowweplay.wordpress.com/2016/09/29/f...

Out of the 142 people I've formally interviewed, at least ten have passed away since I started. If you ever need a motivation to reach out - let it be that!

I wrote a long article about Rieko Kodama, her career at Sega, the evolution of her company, the games she worked on (including some canceled games and/or games for which she is not credited), the status of women and working conditions in the video game industry, etc.

Counterclockwise from top left: Rieko Kodama, Alis and Lutz from Phantasy Star, Sonic in a maze, Alex Kidd and his motorbike next to Flicky on a waterfront pier, Joe Musashi and his dog near the Statue of Liberty facing a skyline, the three playable characters from Golden Axe seen from behind on the edge of a cliff, and one of the flying ships from Skies of Arcadia.

It is bandcamp Friday which means today is the day to buy some of my music (or anyone’s).

just a reminder that bandcamp friday is tomorrow & streaming services are interrupting music streams with ai generated shit, flooding the database with artists that don't exist in any way other than profiting the platform owners

so instead of paying a monthly fee, buy an album or two each month ok

When replaying FFT be sure to bring the story characters along, even after in the older version their dialogue ran out... because for this version they wrote a *ton* of new content.

Agrias giving Gaffgarrion a lecture on equality, for example.

Seen posts saying FFT:IC added conversations with party members in the menu. But it didn't! These were in earlier versions of the game. You open the unit's status in the menu, hit select, and then move the cursor to the character's name and hit confirm to see them! IC just made them easier to view.
FFT:WOTL screenshot. A chocobo, Boco, has a line, "(You get the feeling you've met before.)" FFT:WOTL screenshot. Orlandeau, has a line, "Long ago, I was taught to strike from behind and keep my back to the wall." FFT:WOTL screenshot. Construct 8, has a line, "DOES NOT COMPUTE! CANNOT PROCESS COMMAND!" Folks who create videos about games on the internet: I have questions for you if you'd be so kind. I'm trying to determine the relationship between traditional media and those who create videos about games and have never worked for the games press. Sharing is appreciated!

May or may not continue this as I watch my husband play for the first time, but I wanted to see what changes have been made to the Japanese script before analysing the new English translation. As a non-native speaker, it's interesting to see how the text has been edited for spoken dialogue.

Ooh, I was curious about how different the JP was myself. Seems like a decent amount of edits!

For #InternationalTranslationDay here's a roundup of some of my favorite articles/podcasts/etc. on video game localization from the past year or so, starting with this one:

Absolutely amazing video/podcast here on directing video game voice actors, and how that ties in with the translation/localization process. Featuring veteran localizers Morgan Rushton (DQ8, FF12, FF14, and more) and Oli Chance (Ni no Kuni, myriad DQ games, and more).

PSA: The Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions English translation was *not* done by Alexander O. Smith (who was otherwise instrumental in forging the tone of other Ivalice games like Vagrant Story), but rather these fine folks here. This has been a public service announcement.

New to FFT? Ivalice Chronicles has a ton of nice QOL stuff, but here's a thread of some things that newer players might not know, and things that it would be useful TO know!
