I can't draw. Know what I do when I need art and can't make it myself? I check for free, legal sources like public domain or creative commons licensed art. Or I hire one of the many artists I know to make it for me (it's surprisingly cheap). I refuse to steal it.

This is precisely why I refuse to include works with ANY algorithmic generation in my sales and freebies column. I don't care you're giving it away. I don't care it's "just the art", "only for editing", or "a bit of writing".

I will never use my platform to knowingly promote anything using "AI".

It is becoming increasingly frustrating that so many creatives are all in on generative ai EXCEPT in the area that affects their work

Music artists using images but pissed it steals their voices, same for writers with book covers & internals

Combined with clickbait YouTubers, podcasters, and TikTokers chasing the ragebait that got them followers during the OGL controversy turning any minor thing into a huge drama by exaggerating or outright integrally misconstruing issues. Indies can fall through the cracks in a lot of places.

As well as this, I feel quite strongly that the increased prominence in recent years of social media influencers who engage in nothing but ragebait content and harassment has proverbially sucked all the air out of the room, content mills producing bullshit at speed who dominate gaming conversations.

Thankfully @caias.bsky.social gave me advice on how to fix it - heat the pan on high so the liquid inside boils again and the pan expands with the heat but put ice in the lid so it contacts. Broke the seal and my favorite pan was saved.

I had the inverse problem last night. Mom let dinner in a saucepan boil over with the lid on. It's a 3 qt clad saucier worth $180. The vacuum seal when she turned it off suddenly sealed that thing TIGHT.

One of the more profound things I’ve heard recently came from a Mr. Rogers documentary. In a clip from his show, Mr. Rogers had just visited with a musician, and tells his audience that some people play music, and some people don’t, and that’s okay.

And then he said, “The important thing is to find something you feel good about doing.”

That phrasing struck me. “Something you feel good about doing”. Most people would have phrased it as “something you enjoy doing”. Or “something you’re good at doing”. But Mr. Rogers’ subtly different phrasing leads to a profoundly different connotation. “Something you feel good about doing” may not be enjoyable–people who work in hospitals or in disaster zones might not enjoy much of their day, but they probably feel good about helping people. “Something you feel good about doing“ may not be something you’re particularly good at–you may be a terrible artist by any objective standard, but if you feel good about making your art, then it’s a worthwhile endeavor. Looking for “something you feel good about doing” can help you find a truly satisfying life path.

Too often, I can make choices based on “what feels good.” I put aside tasks that are too stressful or avoid activities that seem too difficult, in favor of mindlessly browsing the internet. And I enjoy myself. I feel good while I’m doing that. But at the end of the day, I don’t feel good about how I spent my time. However, reminding myself to do “something I feel good about doing” can motivate me to accomplish those more difficult tasks. It can push me to do something outside of my comfort zone, to try something new that I might not be much good at. And maybe this is a blindingly obvious philosophy to everyone else. But I’m grateful for the reminder.

Also, it is impossible to use "AI" in any way that is legal or ethical because the entire industry is built on plagiarism, IP theft, and attacking creative workers. The only way to "protect the copyright of the artists" is to eliminate algorithmic generation.

I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.

wrote 20 pages on Faulkner's The Bear four hours before final papers were due on trucker pills and coffee and cigarettes and got an A, fuck you.

There’s an interview going around about AI, so before there are any questions, let me state unequivocally that BLACK PHONE 2 is 100% organic. AI was not used at any stage of the filmmaking from idea generation, research, look books, writing, onscreen images - anything. We’re old school and love it.
