When I played second base as a kid, I wanted to be Ryne Sandberg. On the palm of my glove, it said Ryne Sandberg. The Chicago Cubs, for a period of time, were to me almost synonymous with Ryne Sandberg. I’m sure that’s true for many of you, too. It is with great sadness that I share the news, announced tonight by the Cubs, that Ryne Sandberg has passed away. He was 65 years old. A Hall of Famer and a Cubs legend, Sandberg had been battling cancer. He had a positive attitude throughout, and managed to be around the team a number of times over the past two years. I hope that his final days were filled with friends and family and love. We will always love you, Ryno. My thoughts go out to his family, to his friends, to the Cubs, and to everyone who was touched by a great ballplayer and a great person. © David Banks-Imagn Images
