Zero Waste Conference 🇨🇦 started w/ a welcome from Alec Guerin, xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Councillor. He encouraged us to use two-eyed seeing. With one eye see through the academic lens and w/ the other see through the Indigenous lens. Musqueam have been strategic with materials for thousands of years.

Checking in for Canada's National Zero Waste Conference here in Vancouver, BC! Looking forward to a day of engaging talks about waste management and circular systems.

P.S. it's been a while since I've been on Bluesky 👋🏼

The Shines and Temples of Nikko, a perfect blend of natural and cultural heritage. What a lovely UNESCO site.

Hi Bluesky, I'm a freelance writer focusing on regenerative / sustainable tourism, biodiversity, nature, ecology and more. I'm looking for some starter packs, so I can follow editors looking for pitches, DMOs looking for creators, and other SciComm pubs.

If you felt that earthquake in Vancouver, you can report your experience and how it felt. This is part of the USGS' ongoing citizen science project for seismic activity.

Add your report while it's still fresh! It's in my guide under the USGS heading! curiositysavestheplanet.com/how-to-becom...

Me researching for a presentation: "climate change costs the world $16 million per HOUR (WE Forum, 2023)."

I'm sorry what?!? How people make this not an economic issue is just baffling. Also curious if the LA fires altered that statistic, due to the loss of assets from very wealthy people.

I write land acknowledgments for blog posts about places with Indigenous history. I have a guide covering the Wulgurukaba People (AUS). I read this: "Tambo was shipped to the USA in 1883, responding to P.T. Barnum's call for specimens of' savage races' to be displayed in his traveling circus act."

Said goodbye to 2024 with forest bathing. Said hello to 2025 with a snowy hike. Sometimes I'm sad Metro Vancouver doesn't see mods snow, and other times it's quite nice to have snow-free low elevation hikes and snowy adventures in the mountains. Happy New Year!

Happy Winter Solstice from the land of polar nights and the midnight sun (Alaska). Rest easy knowing the light is returning little by little, day by day.

My 1st manuscript has been in peer review status for a LONG time. I finally got an update that a few peer reviewers missed deadlines and/or failed to stick to their commitments. It is unfortunate that peer reviewing is unpaid. Is this common across academia and publishing or only in certain fields?

Always been team real tree, but this year I'm team "keep a potted tree alive year after year." From a downtown apartment to a bigger home I didn't see the need for a new tree. This is the 2nd year I've had this tree let's see how long it lasts! Ornaments are wood from our time living in Germany.

I visited 5 UNESCO sites in Japan. I've been to 50ish globally & thought Japan's were well-managed. However, tourism threatens 60% of UNESCO's natural sites w/ many cultural sites listed "at risk" from tourism. Responsible travel is a must. Have you been to a UNESCO site? Was your experience + or -?

Fungi Friday! Is that a thing? It is now. Which one of these from Olympic NP is your favorite? I can't decide between the clear jelly-like ones or the brown tentacles growing upright (those are my very scientific descriptions 😂). Is it mushroom season where you are? Share photos of your finds!

As a notoriously wordy communicator (I consistently max out the word count on every Instagram post and write long, detailed blog posts), I love the word count of Bluesky's bio! I can finally dump my education, what I do for work, my random smattering of interests, and the places I've lived.

A little forest therapy from the old-growth forest in Olympic National Park. Have you hugged a tree today?

The Epiphytes, or the collection of ferns, mosses, and lichens growing on trees here in Olympic, are breathtaking—truly mindboggling.

After my Kindle broke, I decided to try something new. I'm now the owner of a Canadian product called Kobo e-reader. The Lotus Empire by Tasha Suri came out yesterday - can't wait to dig in!
