Bianca Dos Santos was crushed by a lorry crossing the notorious Battersea Bridge in August 2023.
Two years later, in sentencing the driver, the presiding judge has said she "contributed to her own death": www.yourlocalguardian.co.uk/news/2544526...
LCC's Women's Network responds... 1/4
A group of women on pavement on Battersea Bridge in foreground holding up a black banner with white text saying "Make Battersea Bridge safe for cycling" as a large group of cyclists ride past in the road next to them. Text from LCC's Women's Network reads:
"A 27 year old woman, Bianca dos Santos, was killed cycling over Battersea Bridge in August 2023. This month, the HGV driver who pleaded guilty to causing her death by careless driving was given a suspended sentence and two year ban for failing to check his mirrors and being distracted both by his cab console and a phone call. Yet the presiding judge said dos Santos “contributed to her own death” by riding up the inside of the lorry, as traffic moved forward slowly.
“The Highway Code says clearly that people cycling can pass stationary or slower-moving traffic on the left - dos Santos was cycling legally and sensibly. The issue here is, as is too often the case, not just a distracted driver but the dangerous conditions for cycling on Battersea Bridge. Rather than blame dos Santos, or cyclists, the judge should blame TfL, Kensington & Chelsea and Wandsworth councils for inaction that means thousands of cyclists who use this bridge daily continue to face dangerous conditions.”

* Yes there's one mention of "traffic" - relating to the cost of policing traffic at large events. Which is an example of non-drivers subsidising drivers.

Looking at the "New Met for London" police plan. There isn't a single mention of road crime, dangerous driving or traffic policing *.
Yet of all crimes, road crime is the #1 cause of harm to Londoners. (No, it's not knife crime).
Make it make sense. 1/

Public transport is favoured over driving, parking spaces removed & through routes restricted to favour sustainable transport modes. 30kph limit widespread. Police enforcement. 4/

The Helsinki approach is to make walking and cycling safe and attractive options for people of all ages and abilities, with infrastructure physically protected and fully connected, making cycling attractive. It's the approach we advocate: a proven, evidence-based strategy. 3/

..yes, and the first year of Wales' default 20mph speed limit saw 100 fewer people killed or seriously injured.

As @phil-pja.bsky.social says, people who want to reverse such changes need to answer the question:

'What is an acceptable death toll that justifies getting to work two minutes faster?'
willnorman.co.uk
The evidence is clear - 20mph zones save lives.

In London, they’ve cut deaths and serious injuries by 34% and child fatalities by 75%.

That's why we need to see more 20mph areas.

📢 New article out from our NIHR-funded 'LTNs in London' project.

A metholdogical paper - we nuance perspectives on congestion and its role in LTN debates, while also providing guidance on mixed methods approaches to evaluating transport policies

How does this happen on 20mph road? Speed limit compliance is genetally poor here. Complex junction with poor sightlines, especially dangerous for cyclists. Needs fixing. 2/
