🧵🚓 Last week saw the news that the police weren't going to bother investing the theft of bikes at train stations, if the bike has been left for more than two hours (so basically all bikes at train stations).

BBC London had the story, featuring our CEO, Tom Fyans... 👇

🚆 BBC London finds bike theft at train stations has become almost 'decriminalised: bit.ly/4q5WNzk

LCC CEO, Tom Fyans: "Many victims of theft in the capital just stop cycling - if we want to reduce car trips in London and encourage cycling we have to redouble enforcement against cycle theft."
Bike thefts at stations 'decriminalised'
The British Transport Police will not investigate many categories of bicycle theft, the BBC learns.

Lime Bikes also revealed data showing morning trips up 74% during the strike compared to earlier in the month, and that during the strike, one rider had passed through 9 boroughs, clocking 23km in one ride, while one of their bikes delivered over 200km of rides during the strike. 4/4

...for cycling in London - with too many areas still deprived of safe, comfortable cycle routes & the desperate need for more cycle capacity our routes already face. For those 1 in 4 Londoners who want to cycle more to keep pedalling, we'll need a lot more cycle tracks, crossings, and routes"... 3/4

Our CEO told @standard.co.uk.web.brid.gy "The mass shift to dockless hire bikes during strikes demonstrated the power of cycling to move people around our city safely, incredible convenience of dockless hire & huge untapped potential as a safe, healthy transport mode that remains unfulfilled... 2/4

YouGov survey of 1,000+ Londoners, post-tube strike said 1/5 cycled during strikes, 1/4 will now cycle more, with ~35% of central & East Londoners embracing cycling. Those areas tend to have more safe cycle routes generally than other areas of London currently.

What an extraordinary transformation on the #RoyalDocksCorridor! A 4-lane racetrack for cars becomes a street for people. We attended a celebration event today with the project managers, builders, councillors, Mayor of Newham, and @willnorman.co.uk in attendance. Congratulations to all involved! 🎉

TfL's case study goes a bit wonky when it says protected cycle tracks are mainly "in areas with low traffic". It's true that roads with "4 lanes, 2 have been converted into bus or tram lanes." But Oslo often has cycle tracks parallel to main roads, metres away, as well as some tracks on road. 3/3
londoncycling.bsky.social
Oslo has 100 wide-ranging measures, not just 20mph. Key is target to cut motor traffic 30% by 2030 (from 2015 level). Very similar to London's approach, but going faster? Oslo's mode share for cars is about 1/2 London's already. TfL highlights Oslo taking "space... from cars" as core. Hmm, TfL? 2/3
A pie chart showing the difference between Oslo's mode share and the "national" (ie Norwegian) mode share.
In Oslo, driving = 20% compared to 50% nationally and mode shares for "on foot" are very different (38% versus 23%) as are cycling (7% versus 4%) and public transport (26% versus 11%) etc.
londoncycling.bsky.social
TfL has snuck out new case studies showing how Oslo & Helsinki have reduced fatal collisions to zero ('Vision Zero'). Mayor @london.gov.uk & @willnorman.co.uk aim for London to get there by 2041. Right at bottom of page: tfl.gov.uk/corporate/sa...
Key takeaways? For Helsinki: do 20mph, but Oslo? 1/3
Woman cycling and smiling on a Finnish hire cycle. Next to this a quote from Anni Sinnemäki, Deputy Mayor of the City of Helsinki Urban Environment Division: "The decision to reduce the general speed limit to 30km per hour (19mph) in 2019 was not an easy one to make. The City Board voted on it. But I can say that afterwards no one has regretted it."
