Instead of a Fallujah-type raid slash photo op, complete with embedded network media (they had tv cameras in the hallway!), they could have checked with motel reception to see the security footage & key card access, as well as his car sitting in the parking lot. Instead, they flew his DNA to FBI HQ.

First, when law enforcement says "cooperative" they mean "gave up his 4th & 5th Amendment rights." Second, you don't get to use invocation of rights as probable cause to further violate them. Third, the guy was in his motel room the whole time which could easily & quickly have been established.

I actually have been thinking about this in relation to the surveillance-deportation effort, everyone tracked, all the databases consolidated. all the creative, barter-y, gray economy resourcefulness criminalized. all guerrilla art, secret trysts, private vices, everything sanitized & criminalized

this fills me with actual despair. we've given up before any fight. if a restaurant suggests "my usual order" after scanning my face I think I'll start screaming until i'm hoarse. All the shadowy, liminal spaces & private moments & gray areas, everything human, is being strip-mined & floodlit

given a large enough database, everyone eventually will look like someone who has committed a crime in a place they've never even visited.
