🎉 New paper alert! 🧠 The velocity-curvature power law is one of the 'kinematic laws of nature' (Flash 2021), a 'fundamental law of human control' (Zago et al. 2016), and one of the 'kinematic regularities' (Frith & Frith 2023) thought to underlie all biological motion.

Please spread the word! I am recruiting a PhD student this cycle (Fall 2026 start) to join my team in a new venture: the neuroscience of mood.

If you are curious to learn more, this short talk provides a good overview of why, what and how.

For anyone else who's two weeks into the term and wondering if it was ever thus.

This is "H2O", aka John Logie Baird, writing for his student magazine in November 1912.
The Lecturer’s Lament
Woe! unto ye. Woe! Woe! Woe! for ye have hidden the chalk, and have omitted the dates from your exercises, and ye are all utterly condemned, save only Mr Brash, who hath gotten him full marks.

Woe! unto ye. Woe! for the day of the final examination cometh, and all of ye stand unprepared except only Mr Brash, who hath full marks.

Verily I say unto you, there shall be lamentation and great weeping, and many shall cry “Sir, Sir. Give unto me a class certificate,” and there shall be none given unto them.

And there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Ye laugh and make merry; ye make a great tumult with your feet; and one among you hath smitten me with a pea.

But woe unto Mr Russell, who sitteth on a back bench and doeth his mathematical exercise. Verily it shall be exceeding hard for him on the day of the examination.

What came ye here for to see? Fain would I have shown you crystals of Perthalium Tetroxide, very beautiful. Yea, and the Rhomboidal crystals of Formaloid, like unto which there are none others, and ye would not; putting me to confusion with your tumult.

And when I would have shown you Alums, very precious, ye mocked me, singing, “I care not for the stars that shine.”

Depart ye far from me. Get ye hence unto monkey houses; depart ye unto breweries, for I, having suffered long, will tarry here no longer with you.

Long time in the making: our preprint of survey study on the diversity with how people seem to experience #mentalimagery. Suggests #aphantasia should be redefined as absence of depictive thought, not merely "not seeing". Some more take home msg:

Psychophysics meets moral psych! In the best possible way!

I worry what this means for clinical research and patient reported outcomes, which often measure things like pain on a very simple 1-10 scale, often without clear anchoring.

#MATLAB R2025b has dropped - a quick intro to the new desktop.

R2025b delivers quality and stability improvements, building on the new features introduced in R2025a. Thank you for all the feedback you provided to make R2025b possible.

If you are using R2025a, you should switch to R2025b.

Individual variation in #sociability is a central feature of every society, including #HoneyBees. This study shows that specific genetic variants & #brain gene expression patterns are linked to variation in the social act of sharing liquids (trophallaxis) in bees @plosbiology.org 🧪 plos.io/3VjjXnJ

Why is law stuff like this always two words?
