Implementing #UDL at the new school has been more cherished than I anticipated. We decided to start with #Assessment. It’s a huge perspective shift for most of the faculty but everyone is truly excited about it. Baby steps, but very important ones.

Exhausted brains cannot function properly and come up with genius ideas. If we want teachers and admin at their best to provide meaningful learning, we need to make sure nobody is overworked.

Dr. Katherine Post’s powerful statement in Out of My Mind, the movie adaptation of Sharon Draper’s brilliant book, perfectly encapsulates the struggle faced by countless parents advocating for their children in schools:

“Disabilities don’t hold students back—schools do.”

How do we change this?

If a student is having trouble with an assignment, the goal of intervention time isn't to get through the assignment. The goal of any intervention is to improve the transferable skill that is at the root of the challenge. Homework help isn't intervention. #LeadInclusion #EduSky #InclusiveEd

The more options we give as universal design for learning, the fewer accommodations we need for individual students later. Universal solutions benefit everyone and single out no one. #LeadInclusion #UDL #UDLchat #EduSky #ATchat

U could start by host PD sessions 2 intro Ts to #UDL & how benefits all learners. Learner agency being the goal, learner variability being predictable, barriers in the design & not the learners. Encourage small, manageable opps-& when in meetings, model UDL #UDLchat

If I could do only one thing to shift learning in a school community, I would hang a big banner that reads: The barriers is in the design, not the learner. And no matter the discussion topic, I'd bring people back to this statement. It is the greatest design call to action I know. #UDL

If you just joined a school with a traditional lecture-based teaching, as a principal, what would be your first step towards implementing #UDL? #EduSky #EduChat #UDLchat #cultureshift

I had to stop and breathe to control the urge to reply a troll - I was going to share reliable sources of information. Instead, I simply blocked them.

I’m working on making this a habit. It’s a paradox for an educator, indeed. But a very close one to Popper’s.

I’m working on implementing #MTSS in my new school and having a hard time finding materials in Portuguese (60% of my faculty are not English speakers). So what I’m doing now is embedding Language For Learning strategies that I used in my classes into the Teacher Training so all can access. #UDL

You can save a Canva design to Google Drive and open in Google Slides. It takes several clicks, and the fonts and formatting might not match the original.

Why do this? Perhaps you want your design stored in Google Drive, or sharing/collaboration works better for you in Slides. #EduSky #EdTech

I’m missing a “save to read later” button here. So many great links being shared, the extra steps to have them saved for later are sort of a buzz killer.
