My new piece is about a community in the Blue Ridge who doesnt know a Helene strength storm is coming because the weather alerts have been privatized, & after losing their home, take refuge in the large camps of unhoused people living in the former National Park.

“MVP’s proposed extension of its pipeline into North Carolina — MVP Southgate — is now within half a mile of another dangerous proposed pipeline, Transco SSEP, and the burden on our communities will only be compounded.”

Defending the highway to the NC Outer Banks is problematic: “It’s the overwash of sand that built these islands in the first place and allows them to persist," Moore said. "By blocking that process to defend roadways and buildings, we’re starving these islands of the lifeline they need to exist.”
Why efforts to protect Highway 12 could be making flooding worse
A UNC-led study says decades of road protection efforts may be accelerating erosion and putting the Outer Banks at greater risk.

How Indigenous people in Guatemala fought pollution themselves.

Norman Finkelsteins piece on abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison refusing to condemn Nat Turner after the revolt, to the events on 10/7, was a mind changer for me. Garrison takes shit for softening after the Civil War but this stance was 100% the most violently unpopular opinion in the US in 1831.

Oct. 7, 1925: Lord Willingdon, the former British governor of Bombay, warns a council of the Church of England that ideas of "color superiority" are damaging to the West. "The white races must realize the necessity of treating all colored men in a spirit of absolute equality."

Unreal . . . blame the people impacted by poor air quality instead of the accelerating US fossil fuel industry building production sites in high population areas. ☠️

With apologies, because it’s scary, because it really is scary: latest in my project of messing with stills from ICE vids. Stylizing them to sharpen the focus on the aesthetic project of fascist terror. Chicago today, aiming at a protester named Jess, for documenting him.

Took the whole day off to really catch up in the garden after a long family visit that left things pretty neglected. Second round of starts art struggling but I gave them some food & water & hoping they will mostly rebound. Spinach is up, 20’ of carrots sowed, garden still pumping out peppers. 🌶️ 🫑
Our garden beds with two areas turned and composted ready for planting among the last of the summer stuff. Mustard, kales, and broccoli, with young starts still coming back to life in the middle row under some bug netting. A bottle of pelleted carrot seed, it looks like an old pill bottle. A basket of peppers tomatoes and okra.

We really need to be thinking abt the current regime through the lens of the Second Klan, which helped to nationalize systems of Jim Crow state & vigilante violence & exploitation while creating an explicitly white nationalist immigration system. They even paraded down Pennsylvania Ave.

What an awesome night watching the moonrise. A thin fog settled in the river bottom and the first big V of geese I’ve heard this year flew across the moon. Hope everyone is having a good one out there. 🌝❤️‍🔥
