While Arizona is working to create more data centers to power Al and improve power infrastructure, they denied Navajo Nation support while many live without power

Does Al harm the environment? Not all of it, no. While large Al models (like DeepSeek or ChatGPT) do require significant resources and centralized infrastructure, many Al models are lightweight enough to run on less powerful hardware. Not all Al is generative Al.

OpenAl (who made ChatGPT) said that you can't train Al models without using copyrighted materials. What does this mean for artists, for creatives, for protected cultural information, and so many others when companies steal our data without our consent

Recently, non-Navajo people made an Al generated art series about a Diné girl who loves STEM. This really disappoints me because there are so many talented Diné artists to hire but they instead chose to use Al. Also, Diné stories should be told by Diné

Duolingo is in the news right now for their funny social media account, but behind the scenes are translator layoffs in favor of AI.

How involved should AI be in language learning? Especially when these languages include Indigenous ones? Duolingo has ChatGPT integrations and utilizes AI

I am pro gatekeeping for Indigenous communities. It means keeping sacred information, like our traditions, ceremonies, and stories, protected from people who mean to use it in ways we don’t consent to. We can fight for our rights and have a voice without giving up sacred information to just anyone

Hot take, but pressuring a company to support diversity & inclusion when they don’t want to is going to yield bad results. Like Target bringing in Black-owned brands and then doing nothing to support or promote those brands and removing them when they don’t perform well (1/2)

Diversity is a fact: All kinds of people exist.

Equity is a goal: All kinds of people deserve a chance at success.

Inclusion is how we get to equity. By including them, they can achieve success.

It's that simple.

It’s crazy that ChatGPT is capable of inventing new words that don’t exist in my endangered Indigenous language Anishinaabemowin. Indigenous languages must be handled with accuracy and care, and not be used to train tools like this from data scraping on the web. I wonder where DeepSeek will take us…

It’s baffling that non Indigenous people think they know what is best for the preservation of Indigenous languages. Even if you disagree with our methods, we have a right to choose what to do with our own languages. And we probably (definitely) have more context than you

I’m sad to learn that my law school classmate, Kiah Duggins, died in the DC plane crash last night.

Kiah was an exceptionally talented civil rights lawyer and aspiring legal scholar.

I hope you’ll read about her work and the causes she cared about, some of which I’ll 🧵 below.

What an immense loss
