Since I'll be trading in a pair of my vintage Advent Loudspeakers over the weekend, I decided to stack them in accordance with Hi-Fi lore.

My wife told me I have 24-hours before I must take this monstrosity down.

I realize this is not the sophisticated opinion but:

Wonderful Christmastime is legitimately a top five Christmas song, in my book. It's catchy and fun. It makes me happy every time I hear it. I love the synthesizer. I love the overdubbed vocals. When the song comes on, I turn up the volume. 1/2

Evidence that new US sanctions on Russian oil are starting to bite:

"China's state oil companies and some Indian refiners are avoiding buying Russian oil due to concerns about falling foul of secondary sanctions."

The claim that certain central banks started hoarding gold only after Russian assets were blocked (yellow line in figures) is often made, but inaccurate. The big buyers were active for years before 2022. CBs have been net buyers for almost two decades. This is a long-term development.

Central bank gold purchases driving up the metal's price, but what good is bullion these days? A paper I wrote in 2023 explores how Russian gold reserves helped the Kremlin weather the first wave of financial sanctions in 2022.

Here's why we think this could be important:

The results hold up to multivariate analysis with demographic controls. Moreover, the magnitude of the Trump treatment effect increases among strong partisans, as support for immigration rises the most among strong Rs and falls the most among strong Ds.

Here’s what we found: Among those receiving no info about Trump (control group), support for more immigration is 5.3 among Ds and 3.0 among Rs on an 11-pt scale (where high #s = more support).

Among those "treated" with Trump info, support among Ds and Rs is virtually the same (~4.3).
