We built a calculator that doesn't work, but don't worry, it's also a plagiarism machine that will tell you to kill yourself. It runs on the world's oceans and costs 10 trillion dollars.

My statement on the two year anniversary of October 7, 2023.
“Two years ago today, Hamas carried out a horrific war crime, killing more than 1,100 Israelis and kidnapping 250 more. I mourn these lives and pray for the safe return of every hostage still held and for every family whose lives were torn apart by these atrocities.

In the aftermath of that day, Prime Minister Netanyahu and the Israeli government launched a genocidal war: adeath toll that now far exceeds 67,000; with the Israeli military bombing homes, hospitals, and schools into rubble. Every day in Gaza has become a place where grief itself has run out of language. I mourn these lives and pray for the families that have been shattered. Our government has been complicit through it all.

This must end. The occupation and apartheid must end. Peace must be pursued through diplomacy, not war crimes, and our government must act to end these atrocities and hold those responsible to account.

These last two years have demonstrated the very worst of humanity. We must answer it by modeling the very best: a relentless pursuit of our higher ideals and an unwavering commitment to universal human rights.”

"Mainstream media has become so terrified of appearing biased that they’ve abandoned their basic responsibility to clearly communicate truth to the public. They’d rather hide behind the false comfort of 'some say' and 'experts disagree' than plainly state obvious facts."
The Mainstream Media Is Catastrophically Failing To Meet The Moment
Earlier today we wrote about Trump’s extraordinary admission that he was basing military deployment decisions on old Fox News footage and lies from his advisors. But there’s an even mor…

"Yeah, looks great."
"Are you laughing?"
"I didn't think you could hear me. I mean no, I'm not laughing."

What we think of as "objective journalism" existed briefly in the US in the 1970s-80s as a result of Watergate (which legacy media had to be forced to cover) and was eventually stomped out by capitalism and cable news. Most of our country's history is a culpable media misleading gullible people.

I do not understand why television stations are not showing live coverage of how there is literally nothing happening in Portland and Chicago. I mean, Peter Jennings, Dan Rather, and Tom Brokaw would each be sitting on a set in those cities telling everyone the white house is lying.

Great review that digs into Ryan Murphy's pseudo-intellectualism and the basic disdain he has for his viewers

I absolutely despised Monster: The Ed Gein Story, but not as much as Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan hate their audience (and potentially themselves?)

Anderson's a funky one for me: I love many of his movies (grew up on them like we both did), yet there's a trickiness, or prickliness, that makes his stuff hard to grip sometimes. I've got to be tuned into the right wavelength.
danielwcarlson.bsky.social
Now I want to see it again, and also to write about how Anderson's lifelong penchant for maximalism and mercurial shifts between mournful drama and absurd comedy have found such a spiritual match in Pynchon that it's like they were destined for each other.

Haven't had a movie stick in my head in a while like ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER. While watching it yesterday I thought (at various times) "this is good, I like this, this rules, wow" but was almost overwhelmed when I left the theater and went back about my day. It percolated all afternoon and evening.

So apparently 28 YEARS LATER is getting the movie equivalent of video game DLC? Is this like when they stapled together outtakes and abandoned plot lines to make WAKE UP RON BURGUNDY?

God above, I would’ve been so happy working a copy desk at a city daily in like 1975. Just editing shit, putting the paper to bed, nothing knowing I’m in my groove and it will run as long as I will. I am a man out of time

You can freshen the cliche with a tweaked headline 1 of 2 ways (maybe more I’m not God):
- Straight rhythm match with a twist (These Boots Were Made for Gawking)
- Inserted word in the original (These *Cowboy* Boots Were Made for Walking)

You do not need to do both! Doing both ruins the whole thing
danielwcarlson.bsky.social
My bad, I left out words; I meant I thought I saw you post yesterday about mainlining all of TWIN PEAKS s1-2 overnight, though I might be misremembering
danielwcarlson.bsky.social
I have zero proof for this but my copy editor’s gut says that the intended/desired headline was a straight rhythm match for the original (These Boots Were Made for Gawking) and a killjoy sr editor made them clarify “Cowboy Boots” just to be extra clear even though it was needless and killed the joke
