Sorry Damian, but this is a copy'n'paste of @nilsgilman.bsky.social's article 'The Coming Ecological Cold War' in foreignpolicy.com; but you have made the exact same mistake - as is now a leitmotif of the Guardian's - in that you dismiss KSA & GCC commitment to #hydrogen & hydrogen exports

Batteries have a weight and scale problem which fuel doesn't
And then hydrogen is the *only* fuel that does not produce emissions during production or use

If you look at industry, policy, the people who provide operate energy transmission in the EU today (kinda complicated) then you realise that hydrogen is the MAIN COMPONENT to decarbonising
(yeah, most of the Middle East + elsewhere will be supplying GREEN hydrogen)

The shift from coal to hydrogen for industry and on-demand power will happen, but it will take time. It won't be a shift from coal to batteries: there will only be 1TWh of batteries globally by 2030, out of an overall energy demand of 120,000TWh..
Potential clean hydrogen supply is 1,220TWh

From the 'TYNDP 2024 Scenarios Methodology Report', I have used Chatgpt to convert (a few, selected by Chatgpt) base hydrogen import prices (€/MWh) to €/kg. This probably doesn't involve pipeline costs, but this could be subsidised. Costs are very similar to LNG import prices (€1.80/kg)

Not forgetting the electricity networks
Liebreich's plan for electrification is completely dependent on subsidies: first for the batteries (99% imported from China) and then the grid infrastructure which itself is a massive publicly-funded investment project

I did. The cause of most methane today is fracking, *fact*. It's only that climate scientists are politically motivated to avoid this fact that it is now spreading.

Hello. Fossil fuel companies are *not* the most profitable in the world; Exxon was kicked out of the Dow Jones in 2020 after 90 years. Green stocks routinely outperform fossil, globally
The issue is they are subsidised in many countries (the EU!) and then the wider economy is completely dependent

I've also compiled a list of reports, with pertinent quotes, regarding hydrogen infrastructure. It should provide some clues

Green hydrogen could get to $1/kg, being a rounding error for most cost prices of delivered goods, if it were given the same leniency and privileges as fossil fuels right now

More fossil fuels/LNG? It's not economically viable for many more years. We know what is happening, the costs are obvious, and without a structured shift to low cost #hydrogen and renewables the US is going to lose to the point of total insolvency
Hydrogen for $2-3/kg is half the price of diesel

Yes, and you should quit platforming anti-hydrogen campaigners who are only interested in maintaining the status quo. Batteries don't replace the subsidised fossil energy monopoly!

If anyone needs reminding, the IEA are oil lobbyists, who promote a third of total energy consumption to be derived from biofuels by 2050

Cute.
The IEA, up to its usual statistical reappropriation
Sidelining hydrogen as the major component of the MENA region's plans going forward, reaffirms the IEA's track record of maintaining oil as a global currency
