A positive end to the first week back is that the book is now fully available. It's not on their website yet, but it is on mine.

I'm really happy with how it turned out and grateful to all the authors.

Hope it's useful.

The UK government can't take a position on anything - even this.

Labour has declined most amongst those in their 30s and early 40s.

Those, generally more on the left, have known nothing but Tory and recession Labour.

Starmer was a chance for change. It wasn't delivered. The anger is betrayal.

It was a pleasure to attend this workshop @cevipof.bsky.social and see lots of familiar and new faces. And somehow my first trip to Paris!

On the budget. Do people, generally, think tax/spend is too high or too low?

Up until July 2024, people were mixed, and by a margin probably wanted higher tax/spend.

Suddenly, that flipped. After Labour won the election. This is of course driven by a huge flip amongst Conservatives.

In fact, some of the best performing places, the wealthiest places in the country, have the worst outcomes for poorer boys.

Probably partly due to demographics, where this is worse is not in the 'usual places'.

Poor outcomes in Berkshire, Essex, Norfolk, Sussex...

Some disastrous numbers in this new IfG report. Less than half - half - of boys eligible for free school meals meet basic standards of early-years development.

We're now over halfway through our @sotonpolitics.bsky.social department seminars!

It's been such a good line-up and very grateful for all those who've joined us - today @dafnoukos.bsky.social and last week Peter Dinesen.

In Southampton yesterday there was a national call (via Turning Point, Tommy Robinson, etc) for an anti-migrant rally.

Very happy that even at short notice that march was outnumbered by about 50%.

Although not yet available to read (January 2026!), very happy to see our book on political trust online. Co-edited with @mfair.bsky.social and available open access, we think it'll be a useful addition to the field.

There has been an arson attack on a hotel housing asylum seekers in Southampton.

When, rather than if, someone dies, there HAS to be consequences for those who stoked these flames.

Update
September 9, 2025 at 10:43 AM
I spoke to @newstatesman.com on the results, where my main point from the paper was that there is *no* modelling strategy that shows a positive effect for Labour.

Anyway, it's good to see that Labour's courting of the right is starting to yield dividends.
