Seems that 'the research found the correlation between enjoying international food and a positive attitude towards immigrants was not simply because diners were more open in the first place' is based on several mediation analyses, which is... bold!

We show that coalition signals from the mainstream right to the radical right shift, rather than reduce, existing political divisions.

Really interesting paper.

One issue that complicates interpretation is that they their treatment is exposure to a human-centric AI assistant (ChatGPT) not an autonomous AI agent.

Creates a false sense of security rather than a more accurate subjective risk perception?

📊 @mhaslberger.bsky.social, Jane Gingrich, and Jasmine Bhatia explore how exposure to AI shapes social policy preferences in a UK survey experiment.

💡 Their key finding: when faced with AI, people want support, not just protection

What Happened to Labour's 2024 Voters?

Using the recent wave of the @britishelectionstudy.com I look at people who voted Labour in 2024:
- How many are still with the party?
- How many have left?
- Why might that be?

TLDR: they've left because of economic issues/concerns, probably.

The who, what, when, how and huh of why Labour has lost so much support in such a short period of time

You're not wrong, of course, but it also assumes that media does not increase political support. We found for UKIP, 10 years ago, that this wasn't the case www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

i.e., media coverage increases vote intentions, so justifying the coverage based on that is tautological.

Today in the British elite

Can't see Pompey going down. Just looked solid. But agreed that the team and amount spent should see Saints do better. Not long until the next one!
danjdevine.bsky.social
Good game on balance. Pompey probably deserved the win, Saints never really seemed to get going apart from spells in the second half. Seemed like two teams who will be around 10th!
danjdevine.bsky.social
On the one hand, I think most people are rational, and do what they think is best for them. On the other, I have supported one of the worst teams in the football league for 20 years and currently watching them lose to Accrington Stanley.

I can't access the full piece. Is there anything beyond the headline?

My immediate reaction is: my contract is 40% research and I'll fill that with as much low-quality research as my heart desires.

There is little more important for UK democracy than a new electoral system.

It's not that radical. Non-FPTP systems are used in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and parts of England (e.g., London).

Since WW2, 19 seats in Westminster have been won with less than 30% of the vote. Ten of those were last year. They'll be a lot more next time.
robfordmancs.bsky.social
5 parties on more than 12%, winner gains seat with under 30%. Results like this used to be rare, freak outliers. Now they are routine (there was a second just like this yesterday). Electoral chaos.

I guess I've only really compared to the civil service grades, but that to me seems essentially comparable. E.g., a senior civil service role basically the same as a professorial salary (at least at Soton); senior exec at basically the same as entry level lecturer.
danjdevine.bsky.social
I dunno, I certainly think it's 'delayed', but when I look over at the civil service those on comparable salaries typically hold a lot of responsibility and are mid- if not senior ranks. Especially when I didn't have a permanent job (~2 years ago) that & the ONS were what I thought were comparable.
