Nice example of the importance of illumination angle when making hillshade / shaded relief maps. The OT raster visualization tool allows users to make custom hillshades with control over the orientation of the light source (direction & altitude). Mulitdirectional shading is also worth exploring.

When my dad was little in Saudi, his mother noticed a scorpion crawl up his coat sleeve.

She got him to shuffle the coat off the way toddlers do, and in one swift movement, swept it into the air in a wide arc and smashed it to the ground.

Thread on scorpions and motherhood in ancient Mesopotamia.

Since Friday I’ve driven over 1,800 miles (2896 km) while moving my mom to the area that I live. I nearly got into an accident while skidding on ice. Tomorrow, I start archaeology field school over an hour away. I’m excited but also more than a little tired.

@jeffvandermeer.bsky.social I’m rereading Authority and I’m at the point in which Control remembers the college talk about how institutions are the concrete embodiment of attitudes and emotions. Is that something you pulled from reality? It feels very true.

I think LiDAR data and archaeological resources should remain in the public sphere. However, how do we as professionals educate the public about responsible use of these immensely powerful tools that encourage exploration without unintentionally encouraging looting?
