I am, as ever, immensely grateful to Duncan MacRae, @carlosfnorena.bsky.social, Lisa Pieraccini, and Erich Gruen, as well as to Myles Lavan and the anonymous reviewers of the JRS, for their generous feedback and generative critiques. Any errors are my own.

I began this research project back in the summer of 2020, when it was unclear when I would regain full access to an academic library, much less visit the tomb. I therefore feel particularly lucky to be able to share the final product from my temporary home here in Rome.

In the article, I examine the famous Scipionic epitaphs in their original context to position the tomb as a site for relational engagement with the past, where family history was articulated through an ongoing dialogue with the dead.

I am thrilled to share that my article, “Hoc Saxsum: History as Conversation inside the Tomb of the Scipios” is now available on the Journal of Roman Studies website via FirstView. (It’s also open access!)

Thank you so much, Seth! Your work on historical culture has been so important to my engagement with the tomb, and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to discuss it with you last year.

Most incredible about this is that IU-Bloomington has long been the no. 1 university in the world for teaching Asian languages and cultures, with many programs found nowhere else.

They're slashing many of IU-B's most distinctive programs with zero thought or debate. They probably don't even know.

Bloodbath in Indiana higher ed as public colleges and universities ordered to eliminate 20% of all degree programs, apparently based purely on student demand (=enrollments) and not any rational calculation of need or value.

Indiana public colleges cut almost 20% of degrees
Public Indiana colleges and universities have eliminated 19 percent of their degree programs to meet requirements added to the state’s budget, according to the Commission for Higher Education.

According to a 2021 report, the University of California system:

• generated $82B in economic activity in California

• supported 529K jobs in the state

• generated $21 in economic output for every $1 received

Public divestment from higher ed makes no sense, even in the narrowest economic terms.

There is a false dichotomy drawn between "the ivory tower" and "the real world," and I'm here to report that in a post-industrial society, your real-world economy absolutely hinges on the university.

University towns are factory towns. Universities drive economic activity, not the other way around.

"I don't want a Disney vacation of our history! I don't a whitewashed history, I don't want a homogenized history. Tell me the wretched truth about America, because that speaks to our greatness" -- 20 hours into his speech, Cory Booker is spitting absolute 🔥

I am Jewish.

I have spent literally my entire life on university campuses.

I was the child of two Jewish professors.

Since kindergarten I have spent exactly one year as neither a student nor a professor.

I have, on occasion, experienced antisemitism. But never on a university campus.
