This very very very bad. I cannot stress this enough. I said that they crossed the Rubicon with arresting Ras Baraka several months ago. This is very bad and portends more bad things for regular people.

Everybody knows the science is clear.
Everybody knows that the end is near.
Everybody knows it's gone too far
Everybody knows who the real villians are.
Everybody knows we had better choices
But the liars kept raising their voices
But make no mistake, everybody knows

Consider the following:

• Nosferatu
• Quasimodo
• Desperado
• Mona Lisa

...all have the same meter.

Make of this what you will.

when the people who shuttered USAID learn of a diabetic single mother and her disabled son starving to death 9,000 miles away because of aid cuts, they don't see failure or dereliction or tragedy, but rather success: the people they view as unworthy of life are dying
She has no real way of explaining the danger of their situation to her son, who is 17 years old but cognitively closer to a toddler. And as a single mother too weak to forage, she has no real way of ensuring their survival. She also is too old to benefit from a recent policy change the Thai government made in a bid to prevent mass starvation, granting work rights to some of the 107,000 Myanmar refugees who, like her, live in Thailand’s border camps.

Her son never learned to speak, and needs her help with everything from getting dressed to using the toilet. Since the funding cuts, their survival has hinged on the charity of her Christian church, whose members occasionally give her handfuls of their rice.

She suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure, and begins to sweat and grow dizzy when her hunger is at its fiercest. Some days, she eats nothing.

It's Wednesday. You need some eels in your life, right? And some otters?

Here you go!

A scene of otters & eels, from an early 15th C. copy of Gaston Phoebus's Livre de la chasse. Eel blood is toxic to mammals, but otters don't care. They love them some eels.

Can you blame them?
A medieval painting of otters playing in a pool, chasing and catching eels and other fish. There are 10 adult otters, and what look to be 2 younger otters in a den at the base of a tree. They are all doing serious otter things: playing, eating, cavorting, eating, gamboling, eating, swimming, and eating. They are having a good time. For now.

It can't last, though. This pond seems way too small to support all of these otters, and the painting has a border around it. They can't leave, and soon they will turn on each other in a bloodbath that will make the Donner Party look like a tea time at the Rotary Club. If you check back with these otters in two weeks, I suspect you'll find only carnage.

That, though, is a problem for Future Otters. Today's otters are carefree, with spotless souls.

In all this time I never predicted the story would be useful lens into the minds (such as they are) of many of the people currently trying to turn America from a liberal, multi-ethnic democracy with rule of law into an authoritarian ethnostate.

But here we are.

I first read this story at a single-digit age. It's stuck in my head ever since. I liked the twist at the end, and I think of it literally every time someone pulls out to leave me The Perfect Parking Spot(tm) just as I arrive.

The Importance of Being Important
CALVIN W. DEMMON
"They also serve who only-"
Once upon a time there was a little boy who lived all by himself in the Big City. He lived in an apartment which looked down upon a Very Busy Street, and he had a television and a record player and there were blue curtains on his windows.
His name was Stanley Scheer, and he was about eight or nine.
Stanley Sheer believed himself to be the most important person in the world. He believed that everybody else in the whole world had been put there to help Stanley Scheer. And, worst of all, he thought they all knew about it. For Stanley Scheer thought that everything that happened to him was of great importance to everybody else, and that a whole lot of what happened to him had been planned by everyone else. He thought that all the world was a stage, and he was doing an important monologue under the direction of Them.
For example, Stanley Scheer firmly believed that if he really needed to do something, They would make provision for it. He believed that if he needed an elevator in a Hurry to take him down to the garage below They would make sure that one was waiting on his floor. He believed that if he wanted broccoli for lunch in the cafeteria downtown and there was only enough broccoli for one person left They would save it for him. And he believed that if he needed a parking place someone unimportant would get a Message or something from Them and pull out right in front of Stanley Scheer.
The fact that he didn't always get his elevator or his parking space or his broccoli seemed to prove to Stanley Scheer that They had some sort of Mysterious Plan for him. Because he was the most important man in the world They had to watch out for him, and make sure that he carried out his ultimate purpose. This Stanley Scheer was sure of, and this he believed. They had some sort of Ultimate Purpose in mind for him, and it was up to Them to make sure that nothing happened to him until he fulfilled it,…

John Boorman's Zardoz (1974)

Speaking to the magazine Films and Filming in 1974, Sean Connery said that "Zardoz" was "one of the best ideas [he'd] come across for ages" and claimed to have been "gripped" by lack of "spaceships and rockets" in a sci-fi movie.

This sounds like a bit but I’m being serious: kids using chat gpt for their homework are denying themselves the invaluable experience of learning how to bullshit their way through a problem. You drink some caffeine the night before and figure it the fuck out. That’s a skill. You need it in life.
