At the very start of my last Aiens dive, before I could even begin to descend, this beautiful squid was floating right at the surface, allowing me to photograph it with its reflection on the calm surface.

A Southern Bobtail Squid (Euprymna tasmanica) all snuggled up in the sand. Only its eyes are sticking out of the sand. It is quite small, and the grains of sand are clearly visible.

Why are all the squids in Chiroteuthoidea such freaks?

We got the lanky spaghetti one, the head massager, the one with tentacle sheaths, and the one that uses a tentacle as squid hand puppet to lure in prey.
A bigfin squid (genus Magnapinna) swimming in the ocean. It is a pale pinkish white. It has large fins and extremely long arms. The arms have two sections, a short, thicker section, then a bend, then a much longer thinner section. Two limbs are going down deep, where the other limbs are kind of curvy and not going as far down. Joubin's Squid (Joubiniteuthis portieri) floating in the ocean. The squid is very thin and has a pinkish orange colour. It has a long tail extending from its mantle and is waving in the water. Its arms are long and thin, and are extending out and curing back in. A whiplash squid (family Mastigoteuthidae) floating near the sea floor, surrounded by marine snow. The squid's tentacles are extended, and all its arms are pointing down. The squid has a deep red colour, except for the ends of the tentacles which are a slightly red white. This flappy bit is meant to mimic a squid. The squid is a translucent with a yellow tentacle and yellow secondary fin.

A flock of black and white diving birds float on and dive into Cretaceous seas. They are foraging for small ichthyodectiform fish that have already attracted attention from slightly frightening red Pachydiscus ammonites, which the birds send reeling as they swim around them. Further out are the silhouettes of approaching elasmosaurs. Against the sunset sky above, more birds fly in from the upper left, while floating birds variably consume fish, take it easy, or stare at us, breaking the fourth wall. They seem to ask "is anyone even looking at this part of the image, or did they just look at the centre for two seconds and move on?"

Some like it hot!

Vulcanoctopus hydrothermalis, as you might guess from its name, lives around hydrothermal vents. The water there gets hot, but these octopuses can survive in water as hot as 91°C.

They are also quite small, with a mantle length of less than 6 cm!

There are no terrestrial cephalopods, but the Algae Octopus (Abdopus aculeatus) is closest thing we have.

They are the only octopus species to regularly go onto dry land. They do this do travel from tide pool to tide pool in search of prey.

The octopus has a sort of spiky texture and is greenish yellow with some hings of pink at its centre. The sediment is a light beige, almost white. An Algae Octopus (Abdopus aculeatus) crawling along the sand on a beach as it goes towards a tide pool. It is all shiny and smooth as it leaves the water. There is some green seaweed in the foreground. The octopus is lank and sitting up right. It has its head up and its mantle going to out to the left. Most of its arms are resting on the coral but one arm goes out to the right, curls up and around and then down. Its suckers are clearly visible. The octopus is greenish yellow with some off white in the middle. An Algae Octopus (Abdopus aculeatus) crawling out of a tide pool on a beach. It is going up a small ledge. It is all shiny and smooth as it leaves the water. It is brown. The beach has wet, dense sand. There are four cone shaped creatures sticking out of the ledge to the octopus's left.
