Regarding those moving home countries:
Either everyone is an ‘expat’ or everyone is an ‘immigrant’.
It’s hard to think of more obviously discriminatory language that’s still widely accepted and commonly used nowadays.

My standard for if a site can be a viable Twitter alternative is if I can imagine, say, the boomer sports journalist I follow for breaking trade news actually making an account and using it. For that to be the case, the barrier to entry has to be extremely low, and Mastodon just doesn't have that.
