There is stumping for your movie, and then there’s stumping for your movie, Benny Safdie-style…

You have probably heard this story from me, but a tale went around that one guy I knew was so creeped out by watching THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT at his house in the woods that he put towels over all the windows and watched A BUG’S LIFE twice in a row. Probably apocryphal, but I don’t care.

I can't recommend ORWELL: 2+2=5 enough — a perfect use of a 20th century figure as a lens to examine 21st century authoritarianism, a great example of how to use mural-like filmmaking as a weapon, another reason why Raoul Peck is an invaluable documentarian. 📽️

How Did a Documentary on George Orwell Become the Scariest Movie of 2025?
Orwell: 2+2=5 look at writer who gave us a modern dystopian classic—and examines how authoritarianism works that feels way too familiar.

This was Kaleb's piece on Norm. Absolutely fucking amazing piece of writing from an absolutely fucking amazing guy.

When Norm MacDonald passed away, I remembered a writer who'd previously written about him and reached out. His name was Kaleb Horton. The appreciation he turned in remains the thing I'm most proud to have worked on as an editor at RS. This is a huge loss.

ANEMONE will be heralded as the return of Daniel Day-Lewis, Screen Actor GOAT, and rightfully so — but it's also the sort of directorial debut that displays a young filmmaker taking big swings, and I hope one story doesn't eclipse the other. Really dig this. 🎥

'Anemone' Is More Than Just the Return of Daniel Day-Lewis
The Oscar-winner's performance as a stoic recluse welcomes the legend back to the screen. Yet this familial drama is anything but a mere showcase.

"I mean, that’s the job. Yes, fight these daily battles. Be nice. Keep your head down. Get on to the next fight, but don’t give up."

I remember seeing THERE WILL BE BLOOD and walking out dizzy from having seen what felt like an instant masterpiece. That was the exact same sensation I got from seeing Paul Thomas Anderson's ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER. May be my favorite of his work after TWBB. 📽️

'One Battle After Another' Is an Act of Resistance -- and a Stone-Cold Masterpiece
Paul Thomas Anderson's stunning, thundering thriller about fathers, failed revolutions and our fucked-up times is, simply put, the movie of the year.

i respect how every tribute to robert redford is at least a little bit horny
davidlfear.bsky.social
A few thoughts on Robert Redford, a star whose movies I watched endlessly, who walked the activism walk, who I was lucky enough to interview several times and unlucky enough to piss off during a moderated Q&A (a story for another time.) 🎥

Robert Redford Was the Definition of a Movie Star
Redford, who died at 89, was a groundbreaking environmentalist, the patron saint of independent film, an Oscar-winning director — in short, an icon.

Man, it's going to be HI-larious when that Boys & Girls Club total hits zero. Will we then go into negative numbers, with the kids running up a tab? Thrilling!

Even with the Locarno big-ups, was surprised by how solid this unique take on an old chestnut one was. Sophie Romvari is a real discovery. Keep an eye out for it if it comes to a theater, or streamer, or drive-in, or sheet hung up on a wall in a dark room near you.

So my last TIFF movie of the year turned out to be one of the best. Sophy Romvari’s Blue Heron is major.

"Personal doesn’t begin to describe it, nor does passionate. It’s neither Guillermo del Toro’s best nor his worst, but this feels like the movie he was born to make, and the one he would have died trying to get done."
