Early reader reactions: “Wow!” and “your style has bags of character” and “I just had whiskey, but I think this is pretty good.” Give this long-form caregiving narrative essay a read and share your story too if you’d like:

You won me over with the crochet Patti Smith. That take carries a lot of weight.

I felt the same way when it happened to me!

It’s a song not an album. I just learned it’s a cover, but I like Björk’s version.

Nothing makes me feel more stupid than listening to two people discussing a film.

Them: "The director was clearly using light as a metaphor for man's fear of the unknown, as the camera pans down slowly, the almost imperceptible change in the aperture..."

Me: "I like movie. Movie good."

Also if you like an essay on Substack or in a literary magazine, it’s great if you comment on Substack or post or reply on the writer’s social media. I’ve learned what has resonated with readers of my essay and in some cases have had such meaningful exchanges with them.

I proofread owner’s manuals for a time. I was proud of my work because I made sure no errors got in that would compromise someone’s vehicle. I should have done a book signing!

We don't post much here, but we're REALLY excited that Caregiving Gen X Style was mentioned as a top GenX podcast by AARP Magazine! So, yeah, that's an old person's mag, but if the shoe fits!

“The way to do a piece of writing is three or four times over, never once.”

Writing is hard. John McPhee, who invented literary nonfiction that reads like a novel, developed a four-draft writing method that transforms chaotic ideas into compelling narratives.

This is a showy amount of paw fur.

Yeah I’m listening to the new Taylor album. By Taylor I of course mean ambient artist Taylor Deupree, and by album I mean his wonderfully minimalist composition Somi, and by new I mean it came out in 2017.

I thought about this type of thing the other day when I heard “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” I cannot imagine Mick Jagger waiting in line for someone’s prescription.

This is quite a read. I appreciate your frankness and am sorry for all the frustrations you encountered along the way.

You asked others to share. My mother passed away in March 2015 and I released this into the world on the 5th anniversary of her death.

Thank you for your comments about my story and thank you for sharing your own. I’m so sorry for your loss. You so clearly express the guilt so many of us feel or have felt. It’s so hard for people who haven’t been there to understand. I really appreciated the music references throughout too.
