Some of my personal favorite Clive Revill roles include the COLUMBO episode "The Conspirators," the STAR TREK TNG episode "Qpid" (as Sir Guy of Gisborne!), and as the Russian Rogozhin in Billy Wilder's THE PRIVATE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES. What are yours?

A belated #RIP to the great character actor Clive Revill, who #BTAS fans know as the original Alfred. (The role was recast with Efrem Zimbalist Jr. when Revill went to do summer stock.) Revill's Alfred can still be heard in "On Leather Wings," "Christmas with the Joker," and "Nothing to Fear."

Another cool thing the #JusticeLeague cartoon did was make John Stewart the Ladies' Man of the League, having romances with fellow GL Katma Tui, and JL teammates Hawkgirl and Vixen at various times.

(In that order. John's not a cheater & he's a one woman man.)

(🧵 13/15)

And how cool was that new visual John Stewart got, with the glowing green eyes? It was a nice way to tag him in closeups without using a mask. The idea was that John had been a GL for so long that some of his ring's power had permeated his body. (🧵 12/15)

Phil LaMarr also helped convinced the producers to update John's hairstyle when they revamped the Justice League into the JLU. John's original fade haircut faded away, to be replaced by a more up-to-date shaved head & goatee. (🧵 10/15)

BT & company also had the sense to update John Stewart's characterization a bit. When he was first introduced in 1972, Stewart was an architect and had a somewhat clichéd "Angry Young Black Man" characterization. I suppose it wasn't as clichéd back then, though. (🧵 6/15)

This was a BIG DEAL for John Stewart, as he'd never been depicted in live action or animation before. Whenever the character of Green Lantern had been used in outside media, it was Hal Jordan, the Silver & Bronze Age version of Green Lantern. (🧵 5/15)

John Stewart voice actor & comic book fan Phil LaMarr has talked about how meaningful it was for him to be playing THE Green Lantern on the #JusticeLeague show. Not the substitute, not the replacement, not the standby. John Stewart was THE Green Lantern of the DCAU. That's cool. (🧵 4/15)
February 1, 2025 at 7:29 PM
But instead, the creators realized that it'd be cooler to have a more diverse lineup for the #JusticeLeague so it wasn't just a bunch of white guys saving the world every week. So we got John instead of Hal or Kyle, and Hawkgirl instead of Aquaman. And it was a better show for it. (🧵 3/15)
February 1, 2025 at 7:29 PM
It would've been the easiest thing in the world for them to just use the Kyle Rayner version of GL, since he was the current Green Lantern in the comics & he'd previously been established as existing in the DCAU on #SupermanTheAnimatedSeries. (🧵 2/15)

I wrote #BTAS voice director Andrea Romano after I watched the MURDER, SHE WROTE episode yesterday, to let her know about this funny connection. I figured she'd want to know since the character of Andrea Beaumont was named after her in the first place. Here's what she had to say. (8/9)

I watched the MURDER, SHE WROTE episode yesterday, & I didn't spot any #BTAS references or in-jokes, so I'm guessing the "Andrea Beaumont" name was just a coincidence. They do say the name "Andrea Beaumont" a truly hilarious number of times, though!

And I didn't guess the right suspect, dammit. 😆

The MURDER, SHE WROTE episode aired on February 5th, 1995, just over a year after BATMAN: MASK OF THE PHANTASM debuted in theaters. It was written by Jerry Ludwig, who has no #DCAU connections that I could find. (6/9)

And weirdly, the MURDER, SHE WROTE episode has ANOTHER #BTAS connection: Robert Costanzo, Harvey Bullock himself, ALSO guest stars on the episode as Rudolfo Petrocelli, the company director of the opera. He's doing an Italian accent, to boot! (4/9)

One of the cool things about researching the #DCAU is find out cool bits of trivia you never knew before. For instance, did you know that #HeadOfTheClass' Khrystyne Haje once played Andrea Beaumont in live action? It's true!

In 2023, I was one of the contributors to the book THE MAN WHO LAUGHS: EXPLORING THE CLOWN PRINCE OF CRIME from @crazy8press.bsky.social, where I wrote about how the Joker went from Tim Curry to Mark Hamill on #BTAS.

(Book edited by @loutambone.bsky.social & @richhandleywriter.bsky.social.)

I'm also the only #DCAU Historian who's ever been pictured on the Wikipedia page for BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES, a fact I take pride in.

Since the #BTAS interviews, I've kept on conducting interviews with the folks behind the #DCAU, about ALL the shows, with more to come. Right now I've got about 35 hours' worth of interviews with various DCAU creatives on my hard drive.

So a bit about this profile & why I started it. This profile is run by @trumbullcomic.bsky.social. I've been interviewing folks behind the #DCAU for about 10 years now. If you remember this issue of @backissuemagazine.bsky.social from 2017, I wrote a full 1/3rd of it.
