Friendship is the product of the reaction, and the reactants are your personalities. You know one of them. What other reactant, when added, will result in the product is different for everyone, but there IS a combination that works. You just have to discover that other reactant yourself, annoyingly.

You don't have to think about what to say next, you don't have to pause and consider whether or not what you say next will kill the conversation. If you immediately feel comfortable talking as you normally do, laughing as you normally do, stumbling over your words or making bad jokes, HOLD ONTO THAT PERSON. FIGURATIVELY. OR MAYBE LITERALLY ONCE YOU'RE A BIT CLOSER.

THAT is what the start of a good friendship looks like.

Introducing yourself ("Hi, I'm [name]") and then complimenting ("I really love your makeup") or asking people about themselves ("What do you think of [museum display we're standing in front of, or something]") have by far been the most successful ways to start a conversation for me. And if it's self-sustaining from there, that's what you want. It should feel effortless, or nearly so. If you feel like you're putting in too much effort to keep the conversation afloat, if the conversation feels like a task and not like a fun activity, the two of you are never gonna quite click.

((Note: compliment people on things they have control over, such as makeup, clothes, hair dye or hair style, the pins on their bag, stuff like that. Compliments on physical traits they don't have control over, like face shape or height, will get uncomfortable reactions.)

I met my newest friend because we were both admiring the pinned insect display on campus and I think I made a comment about how weird a certain bug looked, they agreed and said something about the bees (in a way that immediately indicated to me "oh bees are their special interest 100%") so I prompted them to talk more about bees. idk much about bees, I'd like to learn more. And I did. And we spent at least five minutes admiring the insects before class started, and then we sat beside each other. I've now visited their place once and invited them over to mine.

The strategy to making friends is, frustratingly, that you can't force it. But at least fucking knowing that's what the pattern is -- the key ingredient is that it has to feel natural and frictionless pretty much from the start -- is a huge relief for me. And I wish someone had just said that beforehand.

There are certain people you will never be friends with, because their personality and style of conversation fundamentally clash with yours. It sucks but that's what I've learned. You have to keep an eye out for opportunities to start conversations with enough people until you find the right ones. If you're looking for a specific chemical reaction between two substances, but you only know the identity of one substance, you have to keep emptying new jars and vials into the beaker until you see what you want. It's like that.

Or I suppose in other words: if you immediately feel like you can unmask in front of this person, KEEP TALKING TO THEM. OFFER YOUR PHONE NUMBER/INSTAGRAM IF THERE'S A CHANCE YOU'LL NEVER SEE EACH OTHER AGAIN. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. LEARN FROM MY PAINFUL RESEARCH.

I have yet to be successful but I can only assume this is how you make romantic connections as well.

How to actually make friends: from an autistic person who had to figure it out herself because no one told her in plain language, or kept telling her there WAS no secret formula.

I've asked so many people how to consistently make friends and they never gave me a concrete answer. Which just frustrated me, as an autistic person. Of course there HAD to be some kind of pattern in which people you become friends with and which ones you don't. Why does no one seem to know what it is? Why haven't they been observing what makes relationships happen?

What do people mean when there's "chemistry" between two people? What do people mean when there's "a spark"?

The pattern is that you don't have to force a conversation with them.

They'd have moved back to Ashenvale by now but I'm gonna model their house once we have an actual night elf housing zone. Having a solid map of their apartment is more useful to me rn anyway.
