I stitched this old tweet by @ladyofsardines.bsky.social and remind myself of its truth literally every day.
Photograph of an embroidery hoop. A tangle of multi colored threads dangles from the bottom of the hoop, and stitched in grey thread is the following quote by Ursula Wolfe-Rocca: "It can be overwhelming to witness/experience/take in all the injustices of the moment. The good news is that they're all connected, so if your little corner or work involves pulling at one of the threads, you're helping to unravel the whole damn cloth."

Roy: "...being friends with failure does not mean accepting it."

Fragoso: "What does that mean?"

Roy: "It means you may be defeated, but you'll never be on their side. You may go down, but you'll never be on their side."

I was 8 years old the first time I was the one to pick which film to watch at the cinema. I remember staring back and forth at posters of The Princess Bride and Three Men & a Baby as though my very life hinged on this momentous decision. Of course I picked TPB (inconceivable that I didn't).

Surround yourself with the kind of people who consider The Princess Bride to be one of the greatest films of all-time.

(As far as I can tell, the winds rocking the van from side to side right now are White & Greyish Green.)
deborahrosereeves.bsky.social
As well as the various words for wind, the chapter notes the 10th Century text “Saltair na Rann” (Psalter of Quatrains) which lists the colours of wind from each direction.

Manchán elaborates on the cosmology of the colours, but here is an image I found online that simply depicts the compass
Simple diagram of the wind's 12 colours. A circle with short arrows marking the four main compass points and two points between each, like on a clock. The arrows point to the colour words inside the circle. Clockwise, the colours are: Black (North), Speckled, Dark, Purple (East), Yellow, Red, White (South), Greyish Green, Green, Pale (West), Dark Brown, and Grey.

Love the chapter on wind(s) (which are often regarded as the mischief of other worldly beings in Irish folklore and mythology).

Tá an buíon sí ag séideadh inniu.

The fairy horde are blowing today.
A page from the book Thirty Two Words for Field, from the chapter on Winds.

“Let’s return to the fiery steeple that appeared in the sky above Ros Deala in AdmD 1054 to explore why, if it was simply a storm, it was not referred to as a síon, spéirling, eachan, dárdál, gailfean, confadh, garbhuaic or any of the other words for strong storms. Maybe it was an anfa (a tempest or a disturbance in the elements) with aibhleacha in it, which are flying sparks of fire or thunderbolts with the power to split trees and ignite them.

Storm Amy has hit Norway & it doesn’t feel safe to drive the van so I’m hunkered down in the car park of a lovely bird sanctuary. Thirty Two Words for Field was one of the books I had to bring on the road with me and I’m glad to have something tangible of Manchán’s to hold in my hands today.

Like many Irish folks I’m deeply saddened by the loss of Manchán Magan. The loss of the man himself and the loss of the many beautiful contributions I know he would have made to the world. How lucky we are that he left us with so much of himself, his unique perspective, his curiosity, wonder & awe 🕯️
Photograph from my bed of a book by Manchán Mangan and a little grey and white cat resting her head beside it. The book is Thirty Two Words for Field: Lost Words of the Irish Landscape.

I love him so much! I almost stepped on him on the trail, so glad I spotted him and was able to pop him into a safer spot nearby 🥹

I just got a VERY interesting email that allies in congress were upset that so many of my readers were calling about the anti-trans provisions. I'm here to say: good. I won't let them throw our rights under the bus by cover of night.

All's that to say, keep up the calls. They're hearing you.

1. It's shutdown day, and anti-trans provisions are on the line... either today, or in a few more weeks if a clean continuing resolution passes.

Trump posted a video this morning blaming a shutdown on trans people and immigrants.

Here is your shutdown guide.

Some of you might remember Menna? Well, as @mommunism.bsky.social announced recently, she was evacuated to Dublin to continue her studies. She is so relieved, but will need some help with living expenses. She's very determined and I know she'll go on to help others.
