Fight - War of Words

A project from legendary Judas Priest singer Rob Halford (during the early 90's hiatus) that had a harder edge and was more groove-metal.

An excellent release (follow-up not so much) that's probably overlooked.

Memo: Bands (and labels)

If you release your music and it's not available for download apart from Amazon or iTunes there will be a bunch of people who cannot buy it.

I'm not interested in streaming services; I want to own a copy.

Astronoid's recent release was the catalyst for this post.

I'm nearing the end of my experiment with posting about a different band every day (I fouled up once and posted a band twice - but my best-of 2025 list was nine bands in one day) for a year.

I figure it's something I'm doing wrong, but the level of engagement on this platform has been...

Opeth - Blackwater Park

I was intro'd to this venerable Swedish progressive/melo-death band on 'Still Life' (previous album), but this remains my favourite album. Amazing compositions.

Their recent output though...

After seeing a couple of recent injuries in cricket scenarios from balls hitting the tips of fingers, I would like to posit a rule:

"Don't poke a moving cricket ball."

Ignore this rule at your peril.

I believe it would apply to many other types of balls used in other sports.

Trimming the size of the public service lines the pockets of big consulting firms.

What is sold as a cost saving measure (cutting staff) usually ends up costing more as outsourced work is required to fill the gaps.

The idea that as long as companies are making money, everything's good is flawed.

The Matador - Destroyer

Australian post-black metal band, recently re-formed after a long hiatus. This EP was supposed to be the first of a pair... not sure if we're going to get the rest.

Glad they're making music again though.

In Melbourne this morning, I spare a thought for the volunteers at the various cricket associations trying to decide between "Call it off." and "Make 'em report to grounds."

Reminded of this from about 10 years back. Photo taken in Docklands (Melbourne) on the south side of the marina/harbour area.

For context, the sign is facing the direction of travel.

Fen - The Dead Light

This UK-based heavy, atmospheric black metal (with, I feel, some sludginess) band with a pretty consistent catalogue.

The Dead Light wasn't my intro to them, but I feel like it's a good step-off point for them.

I found watching "Footloose" as an adult with no previous experience with the film a pretty punishing experience.

Mystifying dance scenes, ridiculous dialogue and a laughable plot.

It's popularity baffles me.

The movie was okay, but the section involving the poem "Boots" was very effective.

This is audio-only to avoid any spoilers... But give it a listen... It's pretty metal.

This feels like the kind of thing you may see on April 1st.

Has to be one of the dumber takes (in service to business) I've seen.

I say, hold on to your devices as long as you possibly can - the obsolescence cycle on these things is insane.

Re: Foundation, Season 3.

The fake-out at the end was pointless. It had no impact on the story. Actually robbed the season of some weight.

Death Angel - Killing Season

A venerable thrash act that disappeared for a while. This is my favourite of the albums released since their return from hiatus. Act III is still their pinnacle overall though.

Dawnwalker - House of Sand

An eclectic and unpredictable collective from the UK. Broadly... "experimental progressive metal", but it runs the gamut.

To be honest, I actively dislike some of their output, but this album is a good listen.

ASIC... not so much "asleep at the switch" as "willfully ignorant and inactive".

Is it because they lack funding?

Joe Longo's ASIC. Another day, another scam ignored - Michael West
ASIC chairman Joseph Longo is retiring in May next year. It can't come soon enough as ASIC once again fails to heed warnings of massive scam.

I generally find that metal bands doing covers of other metal songs don't really add much. There've been a couple, but mostly they're not great.

Anyone got a recommendation?

Failing that, good metal covers of songs in general?

Protect This City - Heavenly Realm (Chapter 1)

It's only an EP, but it was my first discovery from this Polish metalcore act, so I'll go with it. Only just now looking into their short back-catalogue.

Nothing *new*, but very solid.

Dream-sequences too.

Just one more little way that the US is fucked.

The party of "law and order" ignores crimes because it suits them.

How many people does this action by the "government" (using that word with some trepidation) put at risk if there's no penalty for lying to patients and giving them placebos.
This is fu*king outrageous!

The federal government on Saturday dismissed charges against a Utah plastic surgeon accused of throwing away COVID-19 vaccines, giving children saline shots instead of the vaccine and selling faked vaccination cards.

Dark Tranquillity - Construct

Venerable contributors to the Swedish melodeath scene with a long catalogue and one of the best vocalists out there. Generally good, rarely great (imho), this album's probably my favourite.

Warrel Dane - Praises to the War Machine

The (now late) singer from Nevermore's first solo album is an excellent sidebar to the band's catalogue.
He has a particular talent for turning Simon & Garfunkle songs into excellent metal tracks.

Pretty incredible win from the Aussies... Propelled by two performances in particular.

Test cricket is great because teams can almost overcome the vagaries of luck.

The way the poms play very much brings luck back into the equation and raises the chance that one player changes the game.
