2026 is only 13 hours old, and I'm already disappointed in it.

Looks like a gloomy New Year’s Eve.

Nevada isn't only casinos. Lithium mining poses some real dangers. Good for @reviewjournal.com posting this 6-part series:
All roads lead to Thacker Pass to solidify Nevada as the country’s leader in supplying domestic lithium batteries. In Alan Halaly's six-part series, hear from frontline Nevada communities that are bearing the brunt of the country’s clean energy future.→ http://reviewjournal.com/thackerpass

Heather Cox Richardson ends 2025 on an especially serious note but hopeful:

"...launched the experiment of government based on the rule of law created by the people themselves, the American people are reclaiming that history."

I hope they don't wake me up.

Las Vegas is hosting its massive "America's Party 2026" on New Year's Eve, featuring fireworks launched from 10 rooftops on the Strip (including MGM Grand, Caesars Palace, Venetian, Resorts World, Fontainebleau, ARIA, Planet Hollywood, TI, The STRAT, and the new Palms)

I'm more the old European type. These contemporary glass-walled homes leave me cold. (Pontificating from my 650 sq ft apartment.)

It’s not our duty to just smile and nod when a man with this much power demonstrates that he’s a pathological liar and an imbecile. Quite the contrary. Real patriots say out loud this is just plain nuts and he’s unfit to hold office.
Trump: "It's funny, I settled 8 wars. Some were going on for 35 years. And we got them settled in a couple of days. Some of them -- one was going on for 37 years. I settled it in one day. But this is a very complex one."

The headline writer seems a little too gleeful about this execution:

The Central Pacific Railroad mounted large snow plows on some locomotives to clear snow while working through the Sierra Nevada mountains toward Nevada. On Dec 28, 1866, Cisco, CA received its largest snowfall in a decade ans it was too much for the plows. t.co/6Elb7FYdX6

As a newspaper geek, I'm hoping both the News and Free Press survive. It's interesting that the only two surviving JOAs are in Detroit and Las Vegas.

I'm happy that Starkman mentioned Phoebe Wall Howard in this piece.
