The nebula surrounding the star is a complex tapestry of gas and dust, glowing in shades of blue and red. The bright blue regions indicate hot, ionized gas, while the red areas show cooler gas. The intricate patterns and filaments in the nebula are the result of powerful stellar winds and radiation from Eta Carinae.

A figure showing the distribution of galaxies in slices of the Universe. The figure is made of fan-shaped plots giving the right ascension and redshift distances as coordinates, assembled in four quadrants. Two quadrants relate to observations, while the two other quadrants relate to simulations. Observations and simulations plots face each other, giving a sense of symmetry to the whole picture. Galaxies are colored blue on observations, red on simulations. Here is the caption coming with this figure for more details: the small slice at the top shows the CfA2 ‘Great Wall’, with the Coma cluster at the centre. Drawn to the same scale is a small section of the SDSS, in which an even larger ‘Sloan Great Wall’ has been identified. This is one of the largest observed structures in the Universe, containing over 10,000 galaxies and stretching over more than 1.37 billion light years. The cone on the left shows one-half of the 2dFGRS, which determined distances to more than 220,000 galaxies in the southern sky out to a depth of 2 billion light years. The SDSS has a similar depth but a larger solid angle and currently includes over 650,000 observed redshifts in the northern sky. At the bottom and on the right, mock galaxy surveys constructed using semi-analytic techniques to simulate the formation and evolution of galaxies within the evolving dark matter distribution of the ‘Millennium’ simulation are shown, selected with matching survey geometries and magnitude limits.
