Today I confronted “border czar” Tom Homan who came to Albany to do Trump’s bidding — push for mass deportations, carry out the assault on working class New Yorkers, and justify the unjustifiable detention of legal permanent resident and father-to-be, Mahmoud Khalil.

Craven contravention of any semblance of democratic governance. The refusal to even allow the broader membership to vote on it is pure cowardice and complicity, but also an admission that what AHA members want and believe and what the majority of its council wants and believes are not the same.
Stunning cowardice by the AHA Council. For shame. "The Council considers the Resolution to Oppose Scholasticide in Gaza ... to contravene the Association’s Constitution and Bylaws because it lies outside the scope of the Association’s mission and purpose." 🗃️

I guess I'm not surprised, but this is still ridiculous. You either believe in democracy or you don't

Setting aside the specific moral and political stakes of the issue, leadership vetoing a resolution which passed by a *5 to 1 vote* should immediately destroy the credibility of what is supposed to be a membership-based organization.

It is clear that it is time to ask serious questions about the function of professional organizations like the MLA and the AHA when they disregard the democratic procedures offered to their members and when they fail to preserve anything resembling the profession itself.

If you happen to be an historian, and you happen to be in NYC and you belong to the AHA, please come to the AHA Business Meeting (Sunday 1/5, 5:15 pm) to vote in favor of the resolution condemning scholasticide in Gaza. Every vote is needed, as there will be plenty of opposition.

ASA is in Baltimore this weekend. I won’t be at the conference — I’ll be around though — but wanted to lift up a couple of sessions I’m excited about.

This one features brilliant comrades in Baltimore talking about the political economy of higher ed and hospitals here.
