An ex-military friend of mine showed me a post he saw where apparently the word went out from the top that "Due to the recent media coverage" they're going to be filtering out guys based on height/weight and probably facial hair.

You know, actually, not a bad choice. It was, after all, written to serve as an entry point to discworld for younger readers, so other than “what’s the deal with Mistress Weatherwax” there’s not even much missing context.

They want to be the aloof Lords of the Protocol and don't want to actually have to do the hard moral/social parts of running social media, because those problems are a lot less fun to solve. Listening to users? Making tough moral choices and balancing those against business needs? They'd rather not.

The Bluesky team reminds me very strongly of the Reddit admins a lot these days
- React strongly and negatively to criticism
- Get in fights with users in public on main
- Come down hard on anyone earning negative press but otherwise deliberately ignore bad actors

We mostly agree here, then. My point is that the shutdown did not give trump "unchecked power". He is abusing powers he doesn't have and the shutdown didn't really change that at all.
