I know we're desensitized, but it's important to note, again, that today's events would have led to the immediate impeachment & removal of any president from at least Truman to at least Obama. We're hundreds of miles on the interstate past Richard Nixon's high school prank-level crimes compared to 👇

Trump wraps up a speech to military leaders that represented a major escalation of his effort to weaponize the armed forces into a tool he can use to violently quash domestic dissent. Hard to imagine how anyone with a shred of dignity can keep serving after this, which of course is the point.

Hey remember when the CDC dropped 6 of the 8 foodborne illnesses from the nationwide monitoring system in July and one of them was listeria? Mentioning for no particular reason www.nbcnews.com/health/healt...

Absolutely true! I think the stakes feel higher around generative AI at the moment given what students stand to lose by using it (I work at a university library, for context). There's so much marketing/hype, and a lot of temptation for them to make their lives a little bit "easier."

I'm thinking especially about how word choices that have a humanizing effect (e.g., "'think' more deeply," "correct its mistakes") are both misleading and potentially dangerous. It's clear many people using LLMs have no idea what they actually do because of the way they're marketed.

I've been thinking a lot about how important our language choices are in discussing generative AI and this blog post from @sonjadrimmer.bsky.social really gets at why: "When vendors feed you language, it’s in the hopes that you’ll regurgitate it to sell their product for them."
MOOCs and the Myth of "Access" — Sonja Drimmer
The recent piece by Vauhini Vara, “ How Chatbots and AI Are Already Transforming Kid’s Classrooms ” is important reading for the week, and there’s much in it to infuriate. It’s good. But there’s one ...

Ikke overraskende.

AI-Generated “Workslop” Is Destroying Productivity
Despite a surge in generative AI use across workplaces, most companies are seeing little measurable ROI. One possible reason is because AI tools are being used to produce “workslop”—content that appea...

Yeah, it ends up feeling both weak and nonsensical. "Carefully removed" and "coincidence" are pretty at odds in that sentence, there.

Hi, can I interest you in some fantasy written by a nonbinary author? With trans and intersex characters? Not based on a franchise by a transphobic author!

Dragonfall, Emberclaw, and my rewritten debut, Pantomime, are out now, and I could very much use some help getting the word out about them. 💖

Would any of you wonderful people like to review a paper on the impact of generative #AI on #SystematicReview integrity? It would be suitable for people with a good understanding of Systematic Reviews. I am not having much luck getting reviewers.... Thanks.
