After 3 years, I'm actually HOLDING a full TTRPG that I WROTE!

Warhammer 40k/Imperial Guard: Five bodies holding a line meant for fifty, with grit, attrition and a prayer. No reinforcements, glory's a rumor. And if you pull this off, you get to do it again tomorrow, somewhere else.

Halo (ODST/Reach): You're just a bunch of guys, fighting against god-knows-what, but there's clarity in that, so you keep going. This fight was always bigger than you.

X-COM 2: Flesh out and deploy Your Guys. Will you risk your star players, or throw rookies at the problem? 65% chance of hitting the target - are you going to risk it, or try and avoid the odds altogether?

Helldivers 2: Cover buys you seconds, not safety - and if no one is shooting back, you'll be overrun. Do you push forward, or catch your breath and reload, but risk losing ground? It's not about one soldier shooting one particular foe - it's about squad cohesion and momentum.

So, #DANGERCLOSE is a bit hard to pin down in terms of gameplay/game design influences - to a degree where I'd even go as far to claim that it's a pretty new kind of game.
Maybe a better way to define it, is by looking at the feelings and vibes it tries to evoke:

Oh, and I'm really pleased with myself that the Update v0.5 notice is a patch. An update patch.

It's like a wargame due to its themes and subject matter, and because you'll be building big dice pools, make saving throws and try to shift the tide of battle.
dicegoblin.blog
It's a bit like a boardgame, in the sense that it doesn't require a GM, has pretty defined parameters (missions, sectors, win conditions, difficulty levels), and gameplay can be tracked through tokens (optional!)
dicegoblin.blog
It's OSR-adjacent in the sense that it has clear choices, consequences and lethality, rulings-over-rules friendly, hackable, lightweight, with a focus on the core action. Then again, I don't think it can run Keep on the Borderlands.

It's a solo RPG in the sense that it can be played, well, solo. It focuses on emergent stories, and uses the dice to guide the events.

#DANGERCLOSE remains a bit hard to pin down in terms of its genre. It has elements of solo RPGs, the OSR, board games, war games, journaling games - and perhaps even more.

I came across a youtube playlist that was just 'remixes of the balatro theme' and it was 57 videos long and I was like, who needs 57 different remixes of the balatro theme.
but it's me. i need 57 remixes of the balatro theme.

A comment on itch reminded me of this idea for creating #TTRPG dungeons I had a while back. I still think its neat and I don't think I've actually shared it here on bsky.

So bsky.. meet Crossword Dungeons!
Do a crossword, use the answers and designs as inspiration for the rooms, get creative!
a how to guide for creating crossword dungeons. Step 1 - Find and Do, do the crossword. Step 2 - See Beyond, find the inspiring words and start to see the shape. Step 3 - Extrapolate, ditch words you dont like, create walls, you contol the dungeon. Step 4 - Draw the rest of the owl (make the dungeon from the inspiration). Step 5 - BE NOT AFRAID. Its just a dungeon created from a crossword, they wont always work.
Useful tips: Metro for daily free crosswords. CrosswordSolver, for tricky clues. DungeonScrawl, for making maps. LootTheRoom - for more random ideas

I hyperfixated in the right direction and finally taught myself the basics of Affinity Publisher. The draft for DANGER CLOSE is looking SEXY.
