In a week when a new almshouse scheme in Southwark won the prestigious Stirling Prize for excellence in architecture, it was good to visit some of the wonderful historic 'hofjes' (courtyard almshouses) of Haarlem and Leiden - still fulfilling their founding purpose.

‘cooking-up-a-storm’ by Sam Stern has been a great favourite in our family
Food people: seeking recommendations for your best cookbook to suit a 19-year-old very shortly to be living away from home for the first time (*stifles sob*). Not a total cooking beginner but also perhaps not necessarily inclined to spend a long time in the kitchen.
