Hi! I’m Alyssa (she/her) and I started this platform in 2020 to raise awareness and create representation for #DisabledInSTEM

I’m currently a 5th year PhD Candidate and #HHMI Gilliam Fellow! I study mutations in histones and tubulin via mass spectrometry and molecular biology! 💜
Alyssa smiles at the camera while in a lab. She has on a white lab coat and a pink sweater that says DisabledInSTEM

✨My first science feature is out in Chemical & Engineering News!✨

I interviewed and wrote about Dr. Shana V. Stoddard, a brilliant disabled scientist changing STEM.

Disabled scientists deserve visibility and celebration.

I’m very grateful to @cenmag.bsky.social for dedicating this year’s Trailblazers issue to disabled scientists.

Representation matters and so does giving students the chance to contribute to the stories.

Honored to be part of this powerful collection.

Where have I been the past couple months? Working on a project that will feature #DisabledInSTEM chemists who pushing the boundaries of their fields! Can't wait for that to go live Monday!

Until then, I invite you to read about 8 disabled scientists who left a lasting mark on modern chemistry. ⬇️

The landscape of life-altering medicines, the ways we “see” molecular structures, and even the periodic table wouldn’t be the same without chemists with disabilities. They’ve been working & innovating since the age of modern chemistry began in the 18th and 19th centuries

"When we design tools that welcome different ways of sensing and thinking, we open new reaction pathways for discovery. Inclusive design doesn’t just widen participation; it expands the very structure-function relationship of science itself."

So many were involved in this project, but I want to give a special shout out our guest editor Mona Minkara!

Mona had a hand in selecting our theme and the 12 Trailblazers featured here. She also wrote a stellar guest essay that I highly encourage you to read: cen.acs.org/careers/dive...

These 12 profiles highlight how this year's @cenmag.bsky.social Trailblazers are expanding our knowledge of the molecular world, while not shying away from talking about the struggles that come with having to navigate inaccessible STEM environments.

It so was hard to imagine having successful career in science as a disabled PhD student that eventually I just left.

Who could have guessed that years later I would help create a magazine issue dedicated to highlighting Trailblazing disabled chemists!

I've enjoyed these accounts by #disabled ecologists and evolutionary biologists of their experiences and advice on improving accessibility and inclusion for folks #disabledinSTEM. 🧪

I have low vision and a degree in data science. My advice: use longer image descriptions for code, offer cheat sheets in a format other than PDF, provide copies of content shown on the board so student can view on their own device, allow use of VSCode or other IDE for robust screen reader support
