Kudos to illustrator Nathan Daniels who made a wordless reference to the famous Banksy artwork auction in this Guardian story about a soccer player's price tag expectations that works on so many levels, not just about the direction soccer is going
Illustration that references Banksy's artwork auction where the work is shredded just as the auctioneer's gavel goes down but with the portrait of soccer player Florian Wirtz

Normalize what a challenging endeavor it is to write *one* book

my own feeling is that getting an academic book published is like getting your script on screen - just once is a major achievement!

The quoted text is the cat telling you how it works, and that your efforts will be futile until you genuflect before feline royalty, right?

Did you see your friend's book at the store? Email them a pic! See them cited? Email them (esp. as aggregators fail to catch many citations)! Did a scholar mention their work! Email them! Did a student use their work in a paper? Email! Did a professor teach their work? Email! Email! All the time!!!

Friends tell other friends when they see their work out in the world. Just got an email about my book and it made my day.

The lonelier the work, the more emails needed.

When I published my first article, a bunch of former mentors and professors emailed me unprompted to congratulate me and compliment my work.

It was one of the things that really helped me push toward finishing my PhD and feel like I was truly contributing to the field.

People need to hear it.

This is great! Do it! Grad students need the support, and many don't work in super supportive environments, academic or otherwise!

I have been doing this for a while. It feels really good to thank/validate/celebrate someone's for their writing. You should do it too!!

Absolutely do this. It especially helps those of us who choose not to have google alerts for our name or books and don’t look at ratings or reader comments. ☺️

YES!

I started doing this thing where when I read a book I admire I try to find the author’s email & send a quick message saying I appreciated it. No big deal, not trying to be weird, but like: thank you for helping me think something new. It’s hard writing books. It matters when people read them.
