The Metals Company's proposal to start seabed mining in the Pacific Ocean by 2027 has faced opposition from countries that are rarely aligned on these issues, such as China, Russia, India, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Indonesia, France, Argentina, Uganda, Mauritius, and Fiji.

I'm going to wax idealistic for a moment here. These negotiations are not just about the deep sea. These negotiations are wrestling with, for the first time, how humans will commercialize and exploit mineral resources that lie beyond national border.

Austria just became the 32nd member state of the 170-member International Seabed Authority to call for a precautionary pause or moratorium on deep sea mining until its environmental impacts on biodiverse ocean ecosystems can be better understood. #ISA29

We do not know enough about the deep ocean to ensure the effective protection of the marine environment!
