Ultimately, I think we’re just back to the DK series not really caring about its exact position in time relative to the Mario series. (After all, this wasn’t an issue post-Donkey Kong Country until Mario Kart 64). DK is a franchise that’s thematically about family and legacy in a way Mario isn’t.

Yes, I’m with Josh on this entire thread. I think Bananza (despite keeping it ambiguous and forcing the player to reach their own conclusion) reinforces Rare’s character chronology, and its Pauline is a new character. But like Cranky, I don’t think you can retcon Jumpman as Mario’s ancestor either.

The recent turnaround of the Donkey Kong franchise's fortunes has been remarkable to witness. I lay out the significance of what's been happening with Nintendo's original video game series, and why long-suffering fans are on an extended victory lap, in a new editorial!

I also used this time extensively sledding with my buddy and having broad discussions about what Donkey Kong Land 2 and Donkey Kong Country 3 would be like, and if K. Rool and the Kremlings would be back in those, or if they'd sit out until the Nintendo 64 game.

Being snowed in so extensively with the Kongs is probably another chapter in my origin story and why I'm such a radical DK and Rare zealot. But so many of my happy childhood memories come from that blizzard! A day after I finally beat the game, I even used the ample snow to build a Squitter snowman.

On this night 30 years ago, a snowstorm began that would become the Blizzard of '96. After only four days back since our winter break, schools would be closed for two weeks, giving me the chance to jump back into Donkey Kong Country 2, find every Kremkoin and Hero Coin, and complete the Lost World!

The world is plenty scary right now, so what's the harm in traipsing into Dracula's backyard for some out-of-season vampire slaying? The Idaho Crew takes Banjo & Kazooie into a madder monster mansion as @kurkogames.bsky.social' Nostalgia 64 goes Castlevania at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT!

Just got back from the grocery store, and the employee working the self-checkout asked me where I got my jacket. I told him it was from @fangamer.com, and he said, "Man, I love that logo. Donkey Kong!"

To which I replied, "Hell yeah, brother."

My happy place is the same now as it was 30 years ago. Just give me an overlook, an ocean, a sunset, and a gorilla to hug.

Since getting a Switch 2 nearly seven months ago, I’ve taken 7,231 screenshots.

6,294 of them are from Donkey Kong Bananza.

39 of them are just different angles of K. Rool’s KAOS Mark II backpack.

To @geekcritique.org’s point, here’s a vintage Nintendo Power spread from mid-1994, shortly before Donkey Kong Country’s release.

Is it illegible trash? You bet! This sucks. But this nausea-inducing toxic cesspool was the look of my childhood.

Great. First people have been setting off fireworks since 7 PM, now tweens with mutant sonic screams will be shrieking until dawn.

I get it. You’re excited to get a new wall calendar. Now let me sleep.

The Donkey Kong podcast had one entire week (plus six additional hours for fun) of runtime in 2025.

Either I’ve entirely lost control of my life or everything is going exactly to plan. Let’s aim for two weeks in 2026 to be sure.

Before the year is out, the #Kongversation checks back in on the Rare side of things with some thoughts on Sea of Thieves' recently-concluded Season 17! Did Smugglers' Tide deposit some much-needed improvements to the game's narrative structure, or is it still washed?

We won't be streaming Sea of Thieves today, but Jeff and I will be recording a #Kongversation about it! Before the year is out, we'll discuss all of the additions and refinements that Season 17 brought to Rare's long-running adventure, including the Smugglers' League, Seasonal Acts, and more!

As 2025 draws to a close and we reflect on the year in the Donkey Kong Universe, I think this screenshot would be the MOST surreal to me in December 2024.

Fan service doesn’t make a game good, but a great game that goes out of its way to include it feels special.

I actually forgot all about that calendar being available! We’ve come a long way from 2021, when the release of a Donkey Kong calendar was the hottest news story for a budding Donkey Kong journalist.
