Ask if you’re free to leave, if they say no, ask if you’re under arrest. If they say no to that too, you must provide name and address if asked, as well as if you’re a citizen, but if you’re not driving and you are a U.S. citizen, they can’t demand ID docs from you. Tell them you want a lawyer.

A *lot* of people who live in Hoboken commute daily into Manhattan. Between the ferries, PATH trains, and rideshares, it's easy. Just be aware it will take time and you will only want to do it once per day. Spending all your time on the UES? Stay elsewhere. Enjoy
